Product Description

Review

'Rather than the often dry or unwelcoming books on the history of cinema which occasionally appear to daunt the budding film scholar, this book recognises that not everyone goes to watch French arthouse films in darkened cinemas with just a handful of others...With chapters covering editing, sound, genre, critical theories and how to write a film essay, this is a fantastic starting point for anyone who perhaps wants to take their love of film a step further to take a course on the subject or even become a critic.' - Jonathan Melville, Edinburgh Evening News

Product Description

The second edition of this accessible book continues to examine how we can extract a broad range of meanings from the films we watch. With an improved structure, better pedagogy and more examples from popular film, this new edition continues to give students of film the vocabulary, context and critical tools they need for serious film study.

This book is an essential component of the film library. This thorough "digest" defines basic vocabulary and concepts, providing rich textual and film color image examples.

This is a good general book 3 Dec 2011

This is a good quick reading book for an introductory course in film, which is why I read the book. But Corrigan does tend to just generalize many of the topics he discusses within the book. Although because most people reading the book will be using it as an elective course at the University it is written effectively.
