Product Description

Review

As part of the popular 'in colour' strand on ITV, this lavishly illustrated book provides a fascinating insight into the lifestyle revolution which changed people's life patterns irrevocably as post-war prosperity gradually replaced rationing after 1954.

Product Description

This illustrated book tells the story of the lifestyle revolution in Britain during the 1950s and 1960s. Drawing on material from the ITV series "The Fifties and Sixties in Colour", it provides an insight into an era which changed people's life-patterns irrevocably. Written by producers Steve Humphries and Miriam Akhtar, this book covers a wealth of subjects from the "golden" era of childhood, changing eating and drinking habits, the motoring revolution, the emergence of labour-saving mod-cons and the rising profile of the teenager. Illustrated with over 100 photographs including period adverts and images of products from the time, this book celebrates an era that brought rapid and discernable change in society from rationing to rock 'n' roll and military services to the mini-skirt.

This book was written to coincide with a forthcoming television series. It records the huge changes that occurred in Britain between the fifties and the sixties.

The baby boomers who were children in the fifties, and teenagers in the sixties, lived through more changes than their parents or grandparents could have thought of.

The book covers such areas as toys, fashions, cars, films, television, the home, food and teenage life. It not only highlights the way things changed between the two decades, but it offers a nostalgic look back to a world that was very different from today's.

This book is hardly great literature, but it is worth a look, either if you're one of the "baby boomers" who lived through the period, or if the 50s and 60s are just history to you. If you're in this latter group, it might actually help you to understand your parents!

The book is interesting enough to stand on its own merits, but I look forward to the television programme, too.
