Book Description

The lives of four singers are far from harmonious. Danny’s marriage is on the rocks, while Vince is struggling with a debilitating illness. Henry is having a mid-life crisis, and Neil is at war with his father. But when they sing together none of that matters. Because something magical happens.

On a mission to compete against the best quartet singers in Britain, they turn to veteran entertainer, Ken, who inspires them to discover a curious vocal technique called The Fifth Voice.

Over the course of a year and several adventures, they make discoveries about the power of music and friendship that help each of them shape the rest of their lives. And when they eventually find The Fifth Voice, they discover a prize much greater than the one they imagined.

'The Fifth Voice' is a poignant and comic tale of four lives and a single passion.

‘A funny, touching and charming tale’

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking read - good characters. 15 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really didn't know anything about a cappella - reading the book I discover even my spelling was wrong. The authors love of the subject leaps from each page and I enjoyed learning about this fascinating world. I found the characters rich and the story was thoughtful and inspiring.

I tend to speed read through books consuming the plot with frightful disrespect for the writing, but I found myself slowing down and enjoying the description and the language.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love the idea of the fifth voice 25 Aug. 2014
By Stuffer
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a book with a big heart. A charming tale that, as a musician myself (but one that only wishes he could sing!) I found intriguing. I love the idea of the fifth voice. It is a marvellous metaphor for love, something hard to grasp and hang on to but always worth pursuing.

As this is a review it would only be fair to say that the book is not perfect. The author needs to show more and tell less. There were a number of times that I was growling at the page, wishing the story would just flow more and not stop to tell me what someone was feeling.

But I kept reading, because that's what the story does, and this is why the book is worth 4 stars. Because I enjoyed it, and can we really make any greater demand from a book than that?

4.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly entertaining novel 28 May 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
One of the suggested "rules" for writing a novel is "write what you know about" - and Mr Connolly certainly knows about music and singing! He also knows how to write a thoroughly entertaining novel.

The Fifth Voice is an easy, light-hearted read, ideal for a train journey, the beach or just sitting in the swing chair in your garden on a sunny afternoon (which is where I read it).

It has a few cliches, it is perhaps more suited to UK readers than US (because of locations and expressions) and is maybe a little simple in style in places - but so what? A good read is a good read - and the Fifth Voice is a very good read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done! 2 July 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a notoriously slow reader, I rifled through this in a couple of afternoons, testament to it being more of a page turner, than to my speedy scanning.

Whilst perhaps, on paper, not my usual type of reading material, I thought the book illustrated brilliantly some of the day to day trials and tribulations we all may face from time to time, but done with a very light touch, and a fair amount of grace.

It's a funny, poignant and thoroughly enjoyable book, that I will certainly be recommending to friends looking for a light, summer read. Top stuff.

It's a delight! The balm of music in the form of a cappella singing plays through the lives of Paul Connolly's four main characters as their domestic lives founder and disintegrate. Gradually, sweetly, through choral singing they discover the joy of new friendship; hitherto unknown skills blossom into new confidence, leading all four to newfound happiness and musical harmony in "the fifth voice". I read this in one sitting. Believeable characters, and tells what barbershop singing is all about. As a lady barbershopper, I found it interesting and absorbing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read, great characterisation! 28 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Once started I devoured it in one sitting. I also learnt a lot about singing and a capella. It was a slow builder with comfortable twists and turns. A light hearted and heart lifting read as the group of four aim to achieve the 'the fifth voice'.
