Brilliantly funny, sad, evocative short stories, and as a supply teacher, this book is an essential part of my kit,as I can guarantee one of these tales at the end of the afternoon will have any group of junior children riveted. Special favourites are "Balaclava Boy" and the title story.

I LOVED THIS BOOK AS A KID. AT 10 YEARS OLD I READ THE WHOLE OF THIS BOOK IN ONE NIGHT,IT'S BRILLIANT.I'M NOW 18 AND I CAN STILL REMEMBER EVERY STORY IN IT.I ESPECIALLY LOVED ' THE BALACLAVA' STORY. IT'S NOT ONLY ENTERTAINING, BUT IT TEACHES MORALS TOO. SO IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A BOOK FOR YOUR KIDS...THIS IS IT!!

I can only echo the excellent comments already left about this book. I was introduced to it at age 10 by my school teacher who read 'the balaclava boys' to us. I then spent my pocket money on the book to read the other stories. Some are better then others but all have a powerful hidden message about morals.

I can't wait until my son's are a little older so i can read the stories to them. This is the kind of book that encourages children to take up reading as a hobby/pastime.

Highly recommended

Boys do not read for fun like girls; this is probably true. Give this to your boys, read it to them and enjoy them enjoyoing fiction. Only the best quality writing will work and there is nothing better than this modern classic.

I first came across George Layton's short stories when I took a BBC Schools radio broadcast in about the 1980's. I believe it was called Living Language.
To hear George read these stories was impressive. He had the children and me spellbound week by week. His special way with words means that anyone can read these books and both enjoy and understand what it was like for an ordinary child to grow up in the 1950's. It's not just nostalgia though, these stories are lively, entertaining and valid today. There are moments of unbounding joy and laugh out loud fun within the pages. George isn't a one trick pony though, he takes his readers through almost every emotion known.
I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who loves a good book and a ripping yarn. I got hold of a copy of the book together with another of his books. Those two books were used year on year until they fell apart when new copies were bought. Whenever I re-read this book I can hear George talking to me through the pages and over the years.
This is a very, very special book.

I bought this for my 9 year old daughter for Christmas. A woman I worked with remembered one of the stories she read as a kid and I purchased it on the back of that. My 9 year old and I everynight read one of the stories from this book and loved them. My daughter got so many presents and books at Christmas but I think this was her favourite. She has since taken it into school to read one of her favourite stories from it "The Balaclava Story"!

We bought this around 1980 for our seven year old son and I recall reading it to him at bedtime fondly. Now that I read to my seven year old grandson at bed time (only Friday's as he lives in Australia - thank heavens for FaceTime!), and having finished Mrs Frisby and the rates from NIMH (an excellent read I can heartilly recommend for any seven year old girl or boy) we needed a new book. Imsgine my delight at finding this excellent collection of related stories is available on Kindle! Well, we've just finished the first two stories and Rohan (my grandson) can't wait for the next - roll on tomorrow morning, that will be tomorrow eveneing where he is, catches me out sometimes!. I can wholeheartedly recomment George Layton's excellent collection of stories for any growing, enquiring mind - excellent!
