Book Description

What would you do?

Jack Carber was in a bad spot. Betrayed and thrown in prison, he had to figure out fast how to survive, and with no idea who to trust and who not to trust. To make matters worse, he had already gotten on the bad side of The Kennel on day one. But his biggest threat was the vacant psychopath named Adder, whose cell he found himself sharing. And with this one, his best tools for survival, his skills as a con man, had no effect at all.

How would you survive?

Jack faced dangerous enemies, an indifferent prison administration, and an inmate advocate with his own twisted agenda. He was determined to keep himself alive and sane, even as he began to slowly give up on himself.

As long as he kept his head down and didn’t fall prey to the fatal mistake of trusting anyone ever again, he’d eventually get out alive... in body if not in spirit. And that seemed like the most he could expect.

What would keep you going?

A sudden revelation and the resulting puzzle, though, throws his world into a wildly different light. He’s unexpectedly clutching at a glimmer of hope, something more than mere survival, and yet fighting to not repeat the mistakes of his past again. But something deep inside him begs him to take that risk one more time.

Because, exactly how far would you be willing to go to protect the best thing that ever happened to you, especially when it hadn’t even happened?

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Gripping, Unusual and Excellent 1 Aug. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
One of those great reads that transcends the usual genre pigeon-holing, I found this a gripping, involving novel that I couldn't put down. The characters are complex and imperfect in the deeply imperfect, even occasionally horrific setting of a men's prison, and with the standard tropes off the table, this keeps you guessing as to where the plot is going and what turn the protagonist's fortunes will take next. I tried the sample first, as usual, and initially found the writing style a little choppy, but swiftly got so drawn in that I stopped noticing I was reading at all - I'm guessing other readers will understand what I mean!

It's hard to explain more precisely all the things I enjoyed without giving away too many spoilers, so suffice to say that (especially at this price), I would highly recommend this to anyone (although people should note the setting and be wary if reading disturbing content such as non-con is an issue for them)

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant read 14 April 2014

this is the first book by this author I've read and have since bought three more. This was a moving tale about incarceration, friendship, rivalries and learning how to survive behind bars. Wonderful storytelling, especially the back storied behind both main characters, how perseverance won out in the end for Jack and his friendship and eventually his lover for Adder. I don't often read prison stories as they tend to be fairly grim, but this had grim but it also had hope and a happy ending too. I am more than happy to recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read! 16 Jan. 2015

I actually read this one months ago, sorry, just getting around to reviewing it now. I really enjoyed this story, it was a very slow build up to the MCs romantic relationship, but that just makes it all the more worth while and believable I think. I know a few reviewers commented that they thought it was graphic, but for me it was actually a lot milder than most of the m/m romantic/erotic fiction out there. This was very much a character driven book and essentially a love story. The biggest shocker for me was that Addy didn't speak for around 10 years was it? I don't think I could even go 10 minutes frankly. Highly recommend this one.

Yes, unexpectedly got drawn into this. As others have noted, not an easy read and the growing relationship between the two central characters is effectively developed; whereas, for me, the sub-plot with the Chaplain stretches believability to the limit.....would certainly look to read more by this author. It is graphic - but it is also a work of fiction that sets out to entertain its audience in a specific way which, for the most part, it does.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy and Enjoy 21 Jun. 2015

To prospective buyers, please don't be put off by the doubts in other reviews (as i was originally), This is a really good story, it has depth and a lot of thought has gone into the story. I am sorry that it has come to an end, it really is a credit to the author that he does not milk these successful stories into books 2, 3 etc, but in all honesty I would be buying them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely one to re-read 1 Sept. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A few pages in, and I wasn't sure this was a book for me. Thank God I ignored myself and persevered, because I ended up not able to put this down until I was finished. It wasn't an easy read, not least because it dealt with the nastier side of prison life, but it was an uplifting one. I admit to a little ol' tear of happiness there at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intense 28 Aug. 2014

Such an interesting insight to prison life. I loved the character and relatiomships as they developed. Some of the brutal graphic scenes made me gasp and wince, but made me love them - jack especially -even more. I'm just so happy that it does have a silver lining in the "happy ending". A great read.

I really liked the story and it was hot as hell in many ways but it cuts a little too close to the knuckle for me. The premise of rape being joked about as "how are we going to explain our first encounter to the grand kids?" and actually just the whole cavalier attitude of rape amongst prisoners as an understandable / accepted custom makes me feel very uneasy. I do understand that rape is prolific in the US prison system but I can't believe it is practiced amongst men who are otherwise civilised once released?! Maybe this attitude is a cultural difference with the US and maybe the author just likes the premise and it isn't supposed to be 'realistic' as such but it made it very uncomfortable and difficult to completely lose myself with the characters.
