More About the Author

Patrick Holford BSc, DipION, FBANT, CHNC pioneers new approaches to health and nutrition. He is the founder of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London (Europe's leading training centre for nutritional therapists), is Chief Executive of the Food for the Brain Foundation and the author of over 30 books.

He is widely regarded as Britain's best-selling author and leading spokesman on nutrition and mental health issues, hence being frequently quoted in national newspapers from the Daily Mail to the Guardian. Patrick is also popular on radio shows and national television as a presenter, interviewer and guest.

Patrick started his academic career in the field of psychology. While completing his bachelor degree in Experimental Psychology at the University of York, he researched the role of nutrition in mental health and illness. He became a student of the late Dr Carl Pfeiffer, director of Princeton's Brain Bio Center, and later a student of Dr Abram Hoffer, Director of the International Schizophrenia Foundation in Canada, who were leading the field in mental health and nutrition. In 1980 he started treating mental health patients with nutritional medicine.

In 1984 Patrick founded the Institute for Optimum Nutrition (ION), a charitable and independent educational trust for the furtherance of education and research in nutrition. Today, ION is the largest training school in the UK offering a diploma course in nutritional therapy and is widely respected as a leading edge organisation by professionals and media alike. Patrick formed a relationship with the late Dr Linus Pauling, who became the Patron of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition.

In 1986, Patrick started researching the effects of nutrition on intelligence, collaborating with Gwillym Roberts, a headmaster and student at ION. This culminated in a randomised controlled trial testing the effects of improved nutrition on children's IQ - an experiment that was the subject of a Horizon documentary and published in the Lancet in 1988. This study was the first of its kind in the world and considerably raised awareness of the role of nutrition in intelligence.

During his years as director of ION, Patrick ran many educational campaigns that brought attention to the importance of zinc and pyrolluyria, disglycaemia, antioxidants, methylation and homocysteine, IgG food allergies, essential fats in mental health - factors still greatly underestimated in the treatment of mental illness. Patrick retired as Director of ION in 1997 to focus on writing, teaching and researching.

Patrick was awarded an honorary Diploma from ION and is also an Honorary Fellow of BANT (the British Association of Nutritional Therapists), and a Member of CHNC (The Complementary and Natural
Healthcare Council). In 2003 he founded the Brain Bio Centre at ION, a treatment centre pioneering the optimum nutrition approach for mental health, to formalise the treatment of mental health with nutrition and to act as a research centre. The Brain Bio centre is owned by the Food for the Brain Foundation, a registered education charity set up by Patrick to promote awareness of the link between learning, behaviour, mental health and nutrition. In 2007, Patrick was appointed Patron of South African Association for Nutritional Therapy, and in 2014 he was inducted onto the Orthomolecular Medicine Hall of Fame.

Patrick lectures and conducts workshops throughout the world on a wide range of topics, to the public, health professionals and the medical profession. In the UK he presents around 50 workshops and lectures a year. His knowledge, personality and enthusiasm, together with his strong scientific approach, helps him to stimulate lively debates, simplifying complex issues and help the public and professionals expand their understanding of health issues. Patrick is frequently involved in government campaigns and debates concerning optimum nutrition.

This is an excellent book to improve your wellbeing, mood and motivation. Written in simple language for the layman Patrick Holford addresses issues with explanations and tells you how by changing your diet and lifestyle you can feel good with energy all day long. A must read for everyone, whether or not you feel you need this book. Young people may feel fine now, even with a lousy diet, but Patrick shows that this will not last and that disease begins with poor diet then escalates to worse issues like diabetes, heart disease and cancer as other body systems become affected.

Great book, very easy to read and makes perfect sense.
I would recommend everyone who is interested in improving his/her mood by simply changing a few eating patterns/habits to read this book.

I generally feel good anyway, but following a few advises for just two weeks I already feel better and even more positive then I did in a long time.

Go for it...

My first Patrick Holford read was "Say No to Diabetes" which I found to be both enlightening and a practical help in curing my diabetes. This book does exactly what it says on the cover too. For too long we have relied on the medical experts to "cure" us when in fact all we are doing is lining the pockets of the big drug companies who give us products that relieve the symptoms but replace them with side effects, which in the case of some anti depressants have resulted in suicidal tendencies. These also tend to be addictive so even when you want to stop taking them the withdrawal is worse than the depression.
I actually bought this book because my girlfriend was feeling low and I knew she was not eating properly because of her job. However whilst reading it I modified my supplement intake by adding 5-HTP and found I was feeling more positive in my outlook and sleeping better too. She too is feeling more "up" even though she is in a very stressful and exhausting career.
I have personally always thought that nutrition is what being healthy is all about and Patrick Holfords' books reaffirm this. I am currently reading his 10 Secrets of 100% Healthy People and this is another eye opening read for those not "into" the benefits of nutrition.
One thing I would say is that if you read several of Patrick's books you will get that deja vu feeling as the same points do appear in several books. This is not a criticism as obviously core aspects of nutrition do effect various aspects of our health and each book does tend to place a slightly different emphasis based on what the title is trying to achieve or cure whether it be Diabetes, Depression or any other ailment caused by poor nutrition.
I thoroughly recommend the Patrick Holford approach to being healthy!

I enjoyed reading this and got through it in about 2 days. Has some useful advice about moods and food. I read this book a good few months ago and still use a lot of the tips, like fish oils, vit C and D etc. But everyone is different and nothing he advices was the magic answer. I am sure if I went to his Brain Bio centre it would help, but it was insanely expensive. I couldnt help but think that a lot of this book was to market his centre. I loved his chapter on thoughts and finding your pupose too.
