Product Description

Product Description

Hank Ballard is one of the best-loved of the King/Federal artists and this is where he started out with the Royals (who soon became the Midnighters).

These are the complete recordings by the Royals. The group had its first chart success with 'Get It' at number 6 in 1953, followed by the controversial 'Work With Me Annie’, an R&B chart topper in 1954.

The earlier recordings are classy doo wop, notably the original version of the later Gladys Knight hit, Every Beat Of My Heart’ (here without the usual overdubbed rhythm section). Also included as bonus tracks are previously unissued takes of 'The Shrine Of St. Cecilia’ and 'Work With Me Annie’.

Notes are by doo wop expert Gordon Skadberg, with a biographical sketch by Paul Harris based on an original interview with Hank Ballard.

This is a companion set to Hank’s 'Dancin’ And Twistin’ (Ace CDCHD 779).

The mastering is done from the pristine master tapes, making it the real thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE GROUP THAT BECAME THE MIGHTY MIDNIGHTERS !!! 8 Feb 2012
By willgee - Published on Amazon.com
First of, all , congratulations to the members of the group, (and their decendents). THE MIDNIGHTERS are finally getting inducted into THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME IN 2012 !! Lead singer HANK BALLARD was inducted alone in 1990, but Hank didn't record all of those hits by himself, and, as Detroit's very first successful R&B group, years before Motown, The Royals deserved induction as a GROUP long before now. Thanks to the Hall Of Fame for FINALLY stepping up to the plate, and putting the WHOLE GROUP in .
There, I said it. Now, on to the music. When the group was still called The ROYALS, Hank didn't do all of the leads . Original members HENRY BOOTH and CHARLES SUTTON also sang lead with the group. This compilation highlights the best of their early years. The Royals/Midnighters recorded for King Records, the same label that brought the world JAMES BROWN and his original vocal group,THE FAMOUS FLAMES. However, both groups actually started on King Records' subsidiary label, FEDERAL RECORDS, and it was on Federal that these sides were recorded .
These songs , highlighting the group's early years, showed the beginnings of the legendary group that would later make million-sellers such as THE TWIST (yes,The Midnighters recorded it LONG before Chubby Checker), FINGER POPPING TIME, LET'S GO,LET'S GO, LET'S GO,THE HOOCHI COOCHI COO, and WORK WITH ME ANNIE.(2 versions of which are included in this collection). Before the group's later rough , raunchy R&B era, they did soft ballads in the style of groups like the Mills Brothers, and The Ink Spots.

One thing that is relatively little-known among R&B fans today, is that The MIDNIGHTERS , as The Royals, actually recorded the original version of the song that later became Gladys Knight & The Pips'first million-seller, "EVERY BEAT OF MY HEART". That song is included here , with Henry Booth leading .(Hank Ballard originally sang background with the group).Booth also leads on the beautiful " Starting From Tonight". Also included is the rocking "Fifth Street Blues" (written by the entire group),and the group's first really big hit, the Hank Ballard-led "GET IT" . All these and more are found in this excellent compilation of The Midnighters (oh sorry..) THE ROYALS' early years. Most are no longer with us,but again ,Congrats to HANK BALLARD (again),SONNY WOODS,CHARLES SUTTON,ALONZO TUCKER,& HENRY BOOTH.Your induction is LONG OVERDUE !!!
