WOW amazing from start to finish my grandson loves this book have also shared it with the children at school and have now purchased 11 more copies for my grandchildren giles is amazing and the illustrations are so colourful has you gripped from start to finish a must for any library well worth the money x

I love any excuse to regress into childhood with a good picture book. When this came in the post, I sat on the bed, wide eyed and read it aloud immediately, and fell in love with it even quicker.
Bits I liked...
The illustrations are brilliant, thank you Gabriele Antonini! It's set in winter, which really enhances the creepiness of the story. It's also a fantastic book to read out loud because it's all in rhyme. I know, rhyme! This creates a magically musical and eerie atmosphere to the story and reminds me of Lewis Carol's The Jabberwocky (I loved this as a kid and still do).
Themes
Gran's are awesome - fact! For a change, adults save the day too, which I think is important here. It plays on that common fear about monsters out to get you (I vividly remember 'feeling' there was one under my bed when I was nine. Sometimes I still creep myself out thinking about it), but then gives them an outcome, which reduces the monster to a mockery, and leaves them feeling safe and secure. Bonus.
Conclusion
The book is great fun for all ages (4+)! Perfect for a midnight feast storytelling. I love it's dark Ronald Dahl nature and the brilliant descriptions. As I read it out loud, my husband told me my Beastie voice was "all wrong". But I have it on good authority that Beastie sounds "kinda dumb" and the Granny "sounds like Pam Ayres." So get your voices in order, and get reading this book before the Beastie strikes your town.

With echoes of Grimm's Fairy Tales this a picture book with a monster intent on eating the children that he tricks into coming out to play. The illustrations are a perfect accompaniment to this fantastic rhyming story. My five year old son adored this book and particularly enjoyed the gruesome ending as clever granny saves the day. Great fun for youngsters aged 5 +
