Product Description

24-year-old Carl Galton represents a new kind of London gangster. In his relentless pursuit of wealth and status, signalled by luxury cars and designer clothes, Carl is brutally effi cient and has scant regard for any traditional notions of honour. Following his brother s death in an East-End bar brawl, his focus shifts from protection rackets in North London to the territory of the oldschool East-End firms - and he is prepared to use any means necessary to establish dominance there. Acclaimed Edinburgh-born actor Iain Glen (The Diary of Anne Frank, Silent Scream) perfected a London accent for his stunning performance as the predatory, Armani-clad gang leader in this chillingly authentic 1988 drama from Thames Euston Films. Directed by the award-winning Stuart Orme (The Sculptress) and featuring an impressive supporting cast - including Susannah Harker (House of Cards), Jerome Flynn (Soldier, Soldier), Jesse Birdsall (Bugs) and Anthony Valentine (Colditz, Callan) - The Fear is a disturbing snapshot of a hidden London, released here for the first time in home video format. Special Feature: brand-new commentaries on first and last episode with Iain Glen, Producer Jacky Stoller and Director Stuart Orme.

This drama was originally shown in 1988 on ITV. It tells the story of the rise of a gangster (Iain Glen) and his "crew" from a pocket of Islington to the wider domains of London. Don't expect fast paced brutal action as seen in so many cheap modern films (eg Football Factory, Green Street). This tv series allowed space for the plot and characters to breathe. It all feels very real. I remember first seeing it as a 15 year old, when it was heavily advertised on ITV. Genuinely thrilling then, I wasn't sure how it would stand up today. I am pleased to say it had me gripped again from start to finish. There are 5 episodes each coming in at approx. 50 minutes. Being a 1980's drama the fashions, cars and lansdscapes are all genuine unlike so many modern takes on what the 1980's might have been like (and therefore caricatured).
The drama abounds with fine acting. Apart from the cool, detached and cynical lead from Iain Glen there is fine back up from Jesse Birdsall and Susannah Harker as best friend and wife respectively.
I waited years for this to appear on DVD and held little hope that it would. It seemed a forgotten masterpiece from a time when the scope and ambition of tv tried to match feature films. Now it is here, I would advise you to buy this as soon as possible and experience The Fear!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good gangster drama 1 May 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Fear is a good gangster drama from the 80s. I did find it just a little bit slow going to start with, but it started to get better towards around the second or third episode. I still recommend this programme to anyone who likes gangster dramas, whether they are excellent or just very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 4 April 2010
Format:DVD
I bought it to see if it was as good as I remembered, back in the 80's

It was. A good piece of drama, concentrating on characters and good solid acting.

I have the memory of a sieve, so the mere fact I remembered it in the 1st place makes it good to start with :)
