Product Description

This is a pre-1923 historical reproduction that was curated for quality. Quality assurance was conducted on each of these books in an attempt to remove books with imperfections introduced by the digitization process. Though we have made best efforts - the books may have occasional errors that do not impede the reading experience. We believe this work is culturally important and have elected to bring the book back into print as part of our continuing commitment to the preservation of printed works worldwide. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

About the Author

August Strindberg (1849-1912) is best-known as the author of Miss Julie (1889). His more than 60 plays were deeply controversial in their time - and still are. They range from near-naturalism (The Father, 1887) to impenetrable expressionism (The Ghost Sonata, 1907). Mike Poulton has a string of successful translations and adaptations to his name, most notably Turgenev's Fortune's Fool (which won a Tony in New York), Schiller's Don Carlos, which was an unlikely West End hit - both starred Derek Jacobi - and the RSC's current Canterbury Tales. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

After writing the Red Room and several other wonderful books, Father is really one of Strindberg's most fantastic work. It is stunning how a person can describe human beings in the way Strindberg does, or did, since he past away over 80 years ago... Just buy it and read it.

August Strindberg's "The Father" 27 Jan 2010
By David King - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
It's a fascinating play, laying bare the relationships, at that time, between the sexes. Chilling in its portrayals. If you're a man and about to get married - don't read this!

Fadren -- Fadrentastic! 13 Sep 2000

Naturalistic fiction has never been so stripped,
a choking ibsenomaic portion;
precocial nautch that grows as it goes.
Strindberg's stronger wiccecræft stronger.
