The New York Times says, "He has a gift for dialogue," while the Los Angeles Times calls him, "A crime fiction rara avis." A proud father of three children, Russell is an avid gardener and cook, and fortunately is blessed with a spouse who doesn't mind weeding or washing dishes.

Top-notch read 31 Dec 2012
By Jeffrey Needle - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I just discovered Alan Russell. Wow! This was about as good as it gets when it comes to entertainment. The action takes place in a hotel in La Jolla, California, north of San Diego. It's the murder of a fellow investigating near-death experiences. I live in Chula Vista, just south of San Diego. I recognized so many of the places, and so many of the attitudes! What I just loved about this book was its ability to keep going off on often-hilarious tangents, and keeping us guessing until the very end. And darn it, a plot-twist that promises a solution to the murder -- well, I won't say any more about that.

I read a lot. This is without question the most entertaining read in many, many months. I was so let down when it ended. Well, off to find more books by Russell. And who knows? As a fellow San Diegan, we may even meet up one day! I can only hope.

Intuative novel 6 April 2013

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were so plausible and alive that each scenario seemed actual , comedic, and sad, and kept your interest through out to the end.
The results were predictable and different at the same time.
I would like to see more characters like these

Another Hit from Alan Russell 24 Jun 2013

The Fat Innkeeper follows The Hotel Detective. I have so enjoyed Russell's books. He has such a way with words, a turn of phrase, that delights the reader. He draws the reader into the inner workings of a major hotel and draws characters that interest and delight the reader. What is particularly wonderful about this book is the in-depth Japanese theme, including the Fat Innkeeper himself. The reader is introduced and immersed in Japanese customs and traditions and juxtaposes them with American traditions and customs. He shows how each struggles to understand and adapt to the other. That was very interesting to me. Something else I really like about Russell's books is that, generally speaking, good things happen to the good characters and bad things happen to the bad characters! Like in the Hotel Detective, there are many humorous situations and characters, though perhaps not as many LOL moments as in The Hotel Detective. This is a highly readable, highly enjoyable read.

Not quite as good as the Hotel Detective but still entertaining. I will gladly await the next book of the series. Am is a likeable character and his adventures are fun for the most part.
