3.0 out of 5 stars not for me 2 July 2013
By Colliesaluki VINE VOICE

I got this book to get ideas for some basic meals and recipes.
whilst the book is well presented, informative and colourful i was a little disappointed. I was anticipating recipes for simple, quick and easy meals, instead this is more a book for those who have the time and patience to spend preparing and cooking meals.
the meals are not basic, but if you are looking for interesting recipes to spice up your 500 calorie days then this is the one for you.
being a very busy person with little time to spend on cooking and preparation, i had a good look through this book and put it down; not for me.

i have found 'The Fast Diet: The Secret Of Intermittent Fasting' By Dr Michael Mosley to contain far more detailed information and basic recipes with a handy calorie counter and sensible meal suggestions. this is more along the lines of what i had expected.

this book will suit some people very well, but if you want basic, quick and easy meals, this is not the ideal book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not convinced 25 Aug 2013
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
All diets are fads in my opinion but my mother was raving about this diet and so i grabbed it to try.

So the theory is that you can feast for 5 days and then fast for 2, but encouraging people to eat whatever they want with no guilt is highly dangerous, because then those 2 "fasting" days arent really going to do anything because you have gorged yourself in the previous 5 days so the fasting days are pointless.

Also who creates recipes that are designed for 10 servings, i mean really ??

Although the recipes are well laid out i found it a bit too ridiculous to be practical.

4.0 out of 5 stars 5.2 Fasting Cookbook. 25 Aug 2013
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
With so many Diets being available to follow this may be the diet book that could appeal to you,the 5.2 diet is a different diet to follow that maybe the better option for some, the book gives you an introduction on the diet followed by information on how it is followed, you eat normally for 5 days then lower your calorie intake down to 500-600 calories for 2 depending on what sex you are,the book gives some sound advice on which days to avoid ie maybe the weekend is not such a good idea as most people have social commitments,on the 2 days of the restricted calories you should make sure that you drink plenty, the advice on drink water as it is calorie free, also it does say do not drink more caffeine based drinks than you normally would, there is a calorie counter at the rear of the book which maybe helpful to you, there is a varied amount of information with helpful hints to help you along the way to.There are a whole set of recipes that you can use which covers from meat to chicken & fish and what the count is for that meal and how many the recipe should serve.
I do know people that have and still are following this diet have had varied success on this diet; but as the book tells you some people have had success with it and some people have not.The book has some nice easy recipes that are not to difficult to follow, this will give you a good start, the book also suggests that you keep a food diary which will help you to keep a track on what you have eaten or what works for you. If you look through the 5.2 Diet book you will notice that dressing for salads are light types not mayonnaise laden dressing, also you will notice that the diet is low fat, which is a sensible type of eating,it also says that meals made from scratch are best so as to keep a tab on what on salts, sugars, fats are in a meal.

This book has a good selection of healthy recipes that taste good and don't cost too much to make.

However the recipes seem more aimed to people who may have more time to cook than the average person. There weren't really any quick easy ones to do, they were quite involved and time consuming to do.

After a few days of doing some of these it was easy to lose interest and go back to the basics of what I was doing before and tbh its working for me so am just going to stick with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fills a gap 4 July 2013
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
We have several shelves groaning with cookery books but lacking solutions for fast days on the 5:2 diet. This book fills the gap brilliantly, with recipes which can easily form part of the non-fasting partner's menu. Everything is presented in the same uniform, clear manner with simple instructions. It's clearly designed to be used and would prove useful to someone learning to cook, not just the expert with no fasting recipes. Highly recommended. It's good to know that fasting doesn't mean no food or no proper cooking.

4.0 out of 5 stars good value - with some tasty recipes 23 Sep 2013
By Don Panik TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I am skeptical of most diets, and have only managed to stick to one in my life. I had heard of the 5:2 but really couldn't see myself buying a diet book. But a cookery book is always welcome. This is a cookery book with an introduction that tells you most of what you need to know about the 5:2 theory. I decided to give it a go, have used the book and lost 2kg (ok its taken over a month - it's no miracle). There are some decent ideas here, it's attractively presented. I like it and am going to stick with it for a bit.

I wanted this book for a dual purpose: for hubby who needs to seriously lose weight and for myself, a newly-diagnosed diabetic who wants to eat more healthily and to reduce cholesterol.

The first thing to note is that with this book, you MUST have a set of scales, as the recipes are precise (both in grams and ounces), with warnings not to guess weights. Common sense, really, if you're looking to lose weight. The idea behind this book is not quite to diet for 2 days and eat like a king on the other 5, but to re-train your mind and body to eat smaller portions, which can be done. However, hubby and I are using the book for healthy eating, and NOT FOR FASTING, AND WE'RE SEEING RESULTS.

For me, the book is excellent, as it combines healthy proteins with lots of veg, liquid and low-GI carbs, and recommends plenty of water in between meals. I have found my energy levels to be fairly stable (no ups and downs) using these recipes, but I am NOT using the book for the fasting for which it is intended, simply for healthy eating recipes on a daily basis. I am eating my regular 4-6 small portions a day, so my daily intake is only a little below the RDA, yet I am seeing results: my cholesterol levels have reduced, and I've lost 13lbs over 4 months (a loss of one comfortable dress size), which I've managed to keep off (albeit with exercise, too). I've substituted wholewheat flour and baking powder for white flour in these recipes, with good results.

For my hubby who has resorted to Slimfast to lose weight, this has provided healthier, tastier and more imaginative alternatives, but admittedly, he's tried this over the summer, when fruit and veg are in good supply and cheap - it would be both harder and more expensive to live on this diet during winter.
