Amazon.co.uk Review

Lurid thrillers don't get much more shameless than this movie, in which Robert De Niro plays a pathological baseball fan whose obsession is focused on a San Francisco Giants all-star outfielder (Wesley Snipes). While the newly signed baseball star is having trouble getting his favourite uniform number from a competitive teammate (Benicio Del Toro), De Niro is having career troubles at the knife company his father founded, and you can bet that his proximity to high-quality stainless-steel blades will be a factor in the suspenseful plot. Recycling parts of his maniacal roles in Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy and Cape Fear, De Niro takes his idolatry to violent extremes, eliminating any obstacle to Snipes' stardom until the baseball hero is forced to confront his most terrifying devotee. Directed with brutal excess and souped-up style by Tony Scott (Top Gun, Crimson Tide), this manipulative nail-biter pulls all the right strings in predictable fashion, but it does have moments that are effectively intense. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

This film is not really that much about Baseball, well it is obviously but the focus is more on a man who's whole life has slowly been going down the pan and now when it has hit rock bottom, he starts to develop a dangerous obsession.

Robert De Niro plays Gil Renard a knife salesman who's life has been slowly going down the apn ever since he stopped playing baseball as a kid. His wife has left him, his relationship with his kid is unstable, the business that his father built up is slowly deminishing, and just when he thinks it can't get ny worse, he is finally sacked.

The only thing that seems to be good in Gil's life is his great love for baseball. He has been a big fan of the 'Giants' since childhood, his favourite player being Bobby Rayburn. However, his love soon becomes a dangerous obsession and he finds himself doing incredible things so that Bobby can win at all costs.

Robert De Niro is absolutely fantastic in his role as the obsessed baseball fan Gil Renard. In fact he is very good in all of the films where he plays crazed obsessed people, such as 'Taxi Driver', however in this film his acting really is second to none. Wesley Snipes is also very good in his role as baseball player Bobby Rayburn, and his performance is rather overlooked by De Niro's which i think is a shame as he is again, very good. Patti D'Arbanville plays Gil's divorced wife, and Andrew J. Ferchland plays Richie, Gil's son, both are good also in their roles.

Overall, 'The Fan' really is a brilliant movie, which i think has been forgotten amongst others of the same genre. Fans of Robert De Niro or/and Wesley Snipes will love it, as will action/thriller fans in general. If you are looking for a well-acted slightly spooky movie, then look no further.

Now this is a movie that can really seem kind of un-original at first, but it really is very entertaining and fun to watch. Robert De Niro is just incredible as the bad guy, real scary, and Wesley Snipes does a good job too! So overall it's an exciting movie with great acting, and it's dvd you've got to have in your collection.

This is the dark tale of a baseball fan who will do anything to keep his favourite player on the team. De Niro is the, sometimes uncomfortably creepy Gil, who is the number one fan of Bobby (Wesley Snipes). All is well until Benicio del toro appears as the player who takes Bobby's spot on the team. De Niro's unstable character (knife salesman by day) flips, and the consequences are ugly. Even after Gil has got rid of the intruder, all is not well for Bobby. The fans turn (except the ever loving Gil) and Bobby's game suffers. This infuriates Gil who feels he deserves a little more after securing Bobby a place in the team. Throughout the film, we are given a glimpse of the two main character's sons and their very different lives. The boys become the focus of the film's finale which sees the tension mounting for both the viewer and Bobby. A decent film, but be prepared for a dark and sometimes violent story.
