Theme from The Family Way (Decca U.K. single F-12536, 1967)
To my knowledge, there are 2 legal versions of this on CD. The other, now out of print, offers more for your bucks as it is supplemented by 12 re-recordings made by other recording artists between 1995 & 1999. This version has a much (needed) boost in sound quality but only adds 1 bonus track "Theme From" as recorded by The Tudor Minstrels.
McCartney's score, I think, is one of his best works outside of The Beatles, with some achingly beautiful lyrical passages, which have a distinct Spanish flavour. I've not seen the film in many years but I do remember that the newly married couple (played by Hywel Bennet & Haley Mills) were planning to honeymoon in Majorca. There's also a groovy variation on the theme with some decent fuzz guitar and organ. The film's northern setting is referenced by the sparing, yet effective use of a brass band. Praise also for George Martin who both arranged and conducted the score.

This is the original Family Way soundtrack and like the remake its only available as an import.

This music takes me right back to the sixties; to the film and to life as it was then. So much more innocent, and a time when your life was not filled with celebreties, mobiles, everything instant including the news, money grabbing footballers - you get the picture. Paul McCartney caught the era with this music and this was a perfect birthday present for me.
