Biography

Ben Cooper is a teller of stories, although the one that interests him least seems to be his own.

“I can’t write about myself — I can’t be sympathetic,” says the man known by his musical appellation RADICAL FACE. “But you always reveal yourself in everything you do, sometimes very brazenly and sometimes very subtly. Those events, once you strip ... Read more in Amazon's Radical Face Store

Product Description

Product Description

More than 8 years ago, Ben Cooper AKA Radical Face, started crafting the story of a fictitious, and sometimes otherworldly, 19th century family. In 2011, he brought those characters to life in The Family Tree: The Roots, which was the first installment of a three-part, stand-alone album series based around the Family Tree he created. He recorded alone in the shed behind his moms house in Jacksonville, Florida. Radical Face will release the second installment to the series, The Family Tree: The Branches on October 22 via Nettwerk Records. Certain instrumentations and melodies that represent a family member will reappear in the second album as a continuation of the story or descendent. Just as The Family Tree: The Roots was limited to instruments that would have been accessible during that era of the story, The Family Tree: The Branches will progress in production by including instruments that would have become available in the next era of the story set from 1860-1910. I like storytelling, and wanted that to be the focus. I looked up genealogy charts and studied some American history for a frame of reference, then pulled from personal experiences and put it all together. Such concepts and stories come naturally to Ben, whom before turning to music wrote fiction. He switched to music after a hard drive crash where he lost his two nearly completed novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great album 6 Nov 2013
Format:Audio CD
Arrived today and very different from the previous Family Tree album. On the third listen now and improving every time.
Quality of the recording is excellent and makes for a detailed and very enjoyable album. Singing style varies throughout and is reminiscent of the Junkyard Chandelier on some tracks and Sleep well (Electric Presidents) or The Roots on others.
If your not familiar with his other albums and projects a quick trip to Ben Coopers website [...] is very much recommended.
Overall very much recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning. 12 July 2014
Format:Audio CD
Stunning. This moves on from The Roots keeping the same characters but with more layered songs. The characters might be fictitious but it comes across as a deeply personal album. One of the very few albums I've heard that has no filler whatsoever. Every song is a work of a very gifted songwriter and musician. There are no negatives, it's that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars The final act of the family tree saga. 14 April 2014

Branches is one step closer to heaven. This is the only constant on my car cd player. It is destined to be a classic, a hidden gem for now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly brilliant 27 Mar 2014
Format:Audio CD
I read somewhere that this guy had almost completed two novels when his laptop blew up and he lost two years work. So, he decided to put it all to music instead. These are tales of love, life and loss put to haunting music. Its downbeat but beautiful.

Like his previous albums - its a grower and gets better after repeated plays. Some editions have the commentary for each song which helps the understanding of the song and where this chap is coming from. Another reviewer said he thinks Radical Face might be a genius - I'm getting that inkling as well.
