*Voted Best Romantic Comedy 2013 in the SpaSpa Awards*

"There are moments in life that define you - moments from which entire futures are carved out, where you can practically see the universe split into two."

Becoming a grandmother at thirty-eight may not be ideal, but Stella Hill can cope - just about - because in two weeks' time she's getting married to the love of her life. She's waited over twenty years to finally get her man; Paul Smart is her destiny, her soul mate. But when Stella finds out she's pregnant - a pregnancy that's unplanned and unexpected, not to mention inconvenient - she takes it in her stride. Marriage, baby, new adventures on the horizon. It's not a problem. At least, not for her.

Just how do you break the news of a baby on the eve of your wedding? And what can you do if your plans turn out to be wildly different from the plans of the one you love? As Stella's dream wedding turns into a nightmare, she learns that sometimes the people we love don't react the way we thought they would.

And maybe sometimes love means letting go.

The Family Trap is the stand-alone sequel to Kindle bestseller Can't Live Without.

"Charming, delightfully witty, human in every aspect. If you're looking for the perfect summer read, pick up The Family Trap." Found Beneath The Covers

"A warm, engaging novel which will compound Phillips' growing reputation as an assured and compassionate novelist who knows exactly how to work her audience. 5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful 7 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
As a huge fan of Joanne Phillips's first novel Can't Live Without, I was thrilled when I heard there would be a sequel- even more so when I got the chance to beta read it! When I received my advanced copy, I was trasnported right back into Stella's world and welcomed with open arms. This sequel definitely doesn't disappoint!

We reunite with Stella just as her daughter Lipsy is about to give birth. This isn't the only change about to occur- Stella is also about to marry the man of her dreams and carve out a new perfect existence in Derby. It seems as though everything is falling in to place. However, as readers of Can't Live Without will know, Stella's life is rarely simple. Soon she's left wondering if her new life is really what she wants. Add to the mix a shocking discovery, a beautiful sub-plot set in a nursing home and a wedding blessing, and you've got a warm, funny story that'll touch your heart and linger in your memory long after you've read it.

Very good read indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than the first book in this series! 26 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Having enjoyed the previous novel in this series, Can't Live Without, I was impatient for the publication of this sequel and hoping it would be as good. To my delight, it was even better!

Maintaining the likeable, entertaining characters that bounced off the page in CLW, the author adds many more at both ends of the age spectrum (no plot spoilers here!) Spanning more generations adds new dimensions and depth to the pacy plot. It also provides great opportunities for brilliant throw-away lines. There are enormously touching moments, too, especially in the portrayal of the complex relationships between the heroine, Stella, her daughter, her parents and the old people in her place of work. The author manipulates this bigger cast with deftness, subtlety and assurance. She appears to know instinctively how to debunk any potential sentimentality or mawkishness by dropping in a laugh-out-loud aside or an unexpected plot twist. She is a writer with great sleight of hand.

A warm, engaging novel which will compound Phillips' growing reputation as an assured and compassionate novelist who knows exactly how to work her audience. Slick, accomplished comfort reading, hugely satisfying for women of any age. The book equivalent of a bar of Galaxy chocolate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 13 Feb 2013
By Kim The Book Worm TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Another cracker from new author Joanne Phillips in this brilliant follow up to Can't Live Without.

Can't Live Without (my review can be found here) saw Stella find her perfect match in best friend Paul and tells all about how they got to this book, which is where Stella's daughter Lipsy is about to give birth and just before her wedding day, Stella finds herself most unexpectedly in the family way too!

There is however, one big problem and that is that Paul doesn't want kids. He abandoned the mother of his now 8 year old daughter when he knew she was pregnant and has only just started to get to know her. Knowing how anti-babies he is, can Stella still marry the man that she loves with all her heart if they want different things and she is one very determined lady who is going to have this baby no matter what gets in her way!

I loved this book easily as much as I loved the first, possibly even more. I could have jumped right on into the pages of this book and joined the cast! A fabulous family, sparring with each other for a lot of the time but with a love that is so deep it has no bounds.

I'm loving Jo's style of writing which is just so easy to follow and keep on turning those pages that you just get entangled in their lives. The story unravels so naturally and flows so gracefully and I absolutely adored hearing about Stella's relationship with her first grandson and also her teenage daughter and her own mother, all of those relationships testing in different ways.

Thanks go to Jo, for bringing these lovely characters into my life and sharing them with me. It's been an absolute pleasure. I look forward to hearing more about them. If you're not planning to write another book about these people that I love so much, I think I'll be quite devastated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining View of Family Life 18 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
From Evelyn Tidman:

I really enjoyed The Family Trap and could not put it down. We are thrown into the story right from the off, following Stella as she discovers she is pregnant, and her tangled emotions as she comes to terms with everyone else's reactions as well as her own, and willing her to set matters straight with Paul. Meantime her new-Mum daughter is learning to cope with her baby.

Joanne Phillips has an excellent, readable writing style. Witty and laugh out loud funny, the Family Trap made me want to both weep and laugh. I was right there with Stella as she battled through one situation after another. The characters lived. I could see them all in my mind's eye - the feisty teenage Lipsy, and Stella's irritable mother, they all come out of the page and to life.

Undoubtedly this book is a very enjoyable read, and I look forward to reading another book by the same author.
