Book Description

Aug 2008
This book is a cornucopia of entertaining activities - ensuring fun for all the family. There are ideas suited to all the different occasions that families spend time together: weekday evenings, summer holidays, birthdays and special occasions, school breaks - even when someone in the family is laid up in bed recovering from illness. A simple index provides quick reference when looking for something to do on a wet afternoon, or a car journey, or when you need Plan B in double-quick time. It is presented in a beautifully blocked cloth cover with a classic retro feel. It helps you: make a family photo collage; prepare an unforgettable breakfast in bed; find your way with a map and compass; map a family tree; solve mathematical and visual puzzles; build a nesting box; and convince someone they are invisible. It shows you how to play 'I packed my bag'. Enjoy family dodge ball. It shows you: how to puzzle your family with riddles; make and use a family code machine; how to play the anagram game; read your family's fortune; and how to play Botticelli. It also includes: play the tray memory game; organise recycling around the house; find out how to put up a tent; make sure your family survives being lost in the desert; test your family's taste buds; and take the best family photographs and create snow angels. All this and much more fun for all the family, it's better together!

4.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too 2 Oct 2008

With THE FAMILY BOOK, Scholastic waxes nostalgic about the time before television, video games, iPods, and cell phones. Believe it or not, families actually used to gather around, playing games that involved nothing more than pen and paper or their imaginations! Seriously - it's all true!

In what can sometimes be called a satirical manner, THE FAMILY BOOK brings out all the games, activities, and family-bonding rituals of yore: charades, "mind reading" tricks, puzzles, and ways to amuse and amaze your family and friends.

The hilarity ensues with tips on how to wash your dog in space, how to make toys out of junk, and such favorites as short-sheeting a bed and how to vanquish (and even slay!) vampires.

Yes, it's quirky, and yes, it may take a miracle for your family to actually sit down together and try out some of the activities. In the long run, though, it will be worth it, especially to see your mom actually begin to think she's invisible or your dad trying to escape a car that's perched on the edge of a cliff.

My niece looks after several children and this book should provide hours of fun, especially in the winter months when they are all stuck indoors.

This book is fun, but I think most of the things are pretty silly. I wanted a book that really had good ideas for fun things to do as a family.

My daughter is 11 and loves this whole series of books. This was a perfect addition. If you have others in the series just be aware it is larger than the others so it will not fit on the shelf well with the others.

My kids and I came across this book at the public library. It was fate and we needed to own our own copy.
