Bound Stems - The Family Afloat (Flameshovel)
The Bound Stems second album wasn't easy. Fall outs, reversed decisions regarding career choices and writers block all played a part in its gestation - but the result seems to be satisfactory. They've toned down their previous math rock tendencies for a far more relaxed, warm and fuzzy approach - though never twee - which compliments their songs about, for the most part, human failings. Especially when it comes to maintaining relationships, possibly a pointed observation of how songwriter Bobby Gallivan felt, spending long periods on the road supporting their previous Appreciation Night release and his subsequent relationship with his bandmates. Although everything seems rosy enough in the garden now as The Family Afloat bobs audibly along on currents of cockle warming, blissful contentment. 8/10.

whilst Bound Stems have drawn comparisons with New Pornographers - no bad thing - the album has plenty of variety and not a weak track on it.
It is so instantly likeable it might suffer from not having hidden depth, but you can't help but fall for the quirky but catchy indie tunes.

Great Album 10 Sept. 2008
By D. Nemes - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I picked up a copy of this album at their record release show in Chicago. A very solid record that holds it own with some of the best releases this year. It reminds me of a Modest Mouse record both in sound and the fact that there really is not a weak song on it. Winston is an awesome song and my favorite song on the album; very different than most of their previous recordings. This record could push them more into the mainstream and garner them a real national following.
