An intricate, beautifully crafted crime mystery based loosely on the real life events surrounding the crimes, and especially capture, of Dr. Crippen and his lover Ethel Le Neve in 1910.
The first half of the novel introduces the cast via numerous threads over a period of days, months and in some cases years. Loads of early 20th Century historical interest via the sinking of the Lusitania and Charlie Chaplin's movies. The second half features the star of the show, the liner S.S. Mauretania as it hosts the crimes and splendid twists.
There is a loving and humorous parody of the early fictional detectives. Suspects and witnesses confess willy-nilly in the face of Dew's 'false' reputation. 'People just talk to you and tell you things,' is Dew's sweet summary of his investigative technique.
All the characters are delightfully drawn. The novel has brilliant details, location, plot and sub-plot. It was an unusual, single-sitting read that was witty, clever and gentle; strongly recommended for holiday cruise reading!
Almost a modern homage to the Golden Age. Just loved it.
