Product Description

Product Description

Time has undoubtedly proved that the cemeteries of the First World War have admirably fulfilled their tragic and sombre purpose. The task which faced the Imperial War Graves Commission at the end of the war was formidable indeed. The results of its hard work to restore the resting places of the dead of the 'war to end all wars' can be seen in this outstanding book. The Commission, now the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, still maintains these beautiful cemeteries to provide a dignified and peaceful resting pace for those who sacrificed their lives in the cause of freedom. John Garfield captures the poignancy of those cemeteries in Flanders, Marne, Aisne, Artois, Ypres Salient, Gallipoli, Verdun, The Somme, Italy and Macedonia with exceptional photographs. Each is complemented with a short description of who was fighting whom and the place and date of each encounter.

About the Author

John Garfield read Medicine at Cambridge and St Mary's, London and his interest in photography developed as a student. Exhibitions of his War Grave photographs have been held in London, Winchester, Southampton and Brussels.

Outstanding 3 Mar 2009
Format:Hardcover
A beautiful book full of beautiful photos. The cemeteries and memorials of the Great War lend themselves to poignant and impressive pictures, and this book delivers these with bells on.

It is also great to see some pictures of some of the lesser known cemeteries and memorials from around the World.

A wonderful book, buy a copy.

Beautiful. 16 Sep 2009

I have visited countless C.W.G.C. cemetaries and have always been struck by the peace and beauty of the places. As the last moments of the fallen must have been noisy, frightening, bloody and awful, I always 'imagine' that they are O.K. now. Great book, beautiful pictures, I flick through it nearly every day.

The Fallen 18 May 2010
Format:Hardcover
Disappointed with purchase, Would have preferred more information on the Western front cemeteries. Nice photographs of the cemeteries, This is the first book of many that I have on the subject on the Great War, that I actually returned to Amazon. Can not really put my finger on my reason for disappointment, No real WOW factor when I first viewed it.
