'Williams really does write like an angel' - Guardian --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

*The epic new novel by the bestselling author of Four Letters of Love and As it is in Heaven* This story begins in Ireland, in the bleak years of the mid-nineteenth century. The men of the Foley family have lost their home and suffered another loss which proves even more vital - beautiful Emer Foley, wife of Francis, mother to the four boys. With nothing to hold them they move on, setting out across Ireland to its Western shore, searching for the untenanted land that is to be their new Eden. But Francis Foley is a bitter man, and his harsh, proud soul can only bring destruction. Inevitably the five Foleys are scattered, each to his own road. Niall Williams leads the reader along on their great journeys through the bittersweet heart of rural Ireland and far beyond its shores. He wrings beauty out of desolation and joy alike, guiding his characters through fire and water, earth and sky, magic and reality, loss and consolation, until finally they come to terms with their own freedom and dreams.

There are no words 8 April 2009
Format:Paperback
This has to be one of my favourite books of all time. I just love it.

There are no words to describe the beauty and skill in which Mr Williams tells a story. I have read everything he has ever written and if you only buy one book of his in your lifetime, make sure it is this one. It will move you beyond words and haunt you forever.

I am about to start reading it for the third time in as many years and each new page brings such utter indescribable joy.

Many people write books, but Niall Williams is a writer.

Marvellous 20 July 2011
Format:Paperback
One of the most beautiful books I've ever read. I read many passages several times (aloud to myself and to others) to fully appreciate the wonder of some of the gloriously descriptive passages. I have given it as presents to friends and received glowing reports. I haven't read any of the authors other books yet, but I will....soon!

This book is an unexpected delight and I can heartily endorse all the positive commments made by other reviewers. The depiction of life in 19th century Ireland convinces totally with it's depiction of the hardships, squalor and callous landlords, but through this shines the dignity and spirit of the Foleys in their struggle to survive. The writing is beautiful, poetic without ever seeming forced and never a wrong note. A book to be read slowly and savoured.
