Book Description

2 Feb 2012
What would you do if the man you love was accused of murder?

Bad things never happen to Charlotte. She's living the life she's always wanted and about to marry wealthy banker, Dan. But Dan's been hiding a secret, and the pressure is pushing him over the edge. After he's arrested for the vicious killing of a nightclub owner, Charlotte's future is shattered.

Then she opens her door to Keisha, an angry and frustrated stranger with a story to tell. Convinced of Dan's innocence, Charlotte must fight for him - even if it means destroying her perfect life. But what Keisha knows threatens everyone she loves, and puts her own life in danger.

DC Matthew Hegarty is riding high on the success of Dan's arrest. But he's finding it difficult to ignore his growing doubts as well as the beautiful and vulnerable Charlotte. Can he really risk it all for what's right?

Three stories. One truth. They all need to brace themselves for the fall.

Review

One of the very best novels I've read in a long while...astonishing, powerful and immensely satisfying (Peter James)

There is nothing not to like...a compelling and flawless thriller (S J Bolton)

A cool and twisted debut (Daily Mirror)

She knows how to tell a cracking story. She will go far (Daily Mail)

Page-turning (Guardian)

It's crime-novel-meets-Hampstead-novel but without the contrivances of the former genre and the navel-gazing of the latter. Funny and perfectly paced, the pervading sense of "there but for the grace of God go you" chills you to the bone (Daily Telegraph)

About the Author

Claire McGowan grew up in a small village in Northern Ireland. After completing a degree in English and French from Oxford University she moved to London and worked in the charity sector. She is currently the Director of the Crime Writers' Association. THE FALL is her first novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars A female-centric slant on an age-old storyline. 15 May 2012
By Flickering Ember TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Whilst not a raging feminist, I like to see strong female lead characters in books other than chick-lit, and this one ticks all the boxes. The characters are likeable and convincing, and the storyline is fast paced, keeping me hooked. I liked the fact that the outcome wasn't blindingly obvious; there were reasons to keep questioning the outcome right up until the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great 24 April 2012
By EssexReader VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
A very good debut novel with believable characters and a decent storyline. When I first started reading this, I did wonder whether anyone could really be as dippy as Charlotte but as the book went on I changed my opinion of her as her character grew in strength. I thought Keisha was extremely well written - showing her softer side as well as the hard gritty persona. Telling the story from three narratives worked well and you got a good feel for the character. The book held my attention well until I got to the middle - I did find it lost pace for a while but it then it picked up again towards the end.

My feelings were that it was a very good book - although not great, however I'm sure this author is destined for much success based on this debut and I would certainly read another of her books in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading 12 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this book. It wasn't up there with the best of all time but it's certainly been a good read and at times I really wasn't sure what was going to happen next. It's a prime example of how things can get out of hand very quickly in life and it's how you react to them that matters. I would recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Close... 16 April 2012
By Welsh Annie VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Interesting that Claire McGowan mentions Elizabeth Haynes in her acknowledgements because their books are very much from the same stable - this was good, but Elizabeth Haynes currently has the clear edge. The characters were a tad stereotyped and not particularly likeable - Dan the banker, Charlotte the posh girl, Keisha the battered mixed race mother... but I did really like Hegarty, the police officer trying to do the best job he can. The story's strong, and I found it quite a good read with the multiple viewpoints working very well, but I did think it wallowed a little in the middle third. Overall this is a good debut, and I will try the author again to see how her narrative style develops.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decently written but a bit formulaic 25 Feb 2012
By Sid Nuncius HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is a decently told story in well written prose, but I found it a bit formulaic and ultimately rather unsatisfying.

I thought the opening of the story was very good and I expected to like the book very much. Claire McGowan writes in clear, unpretentious prose and I thought the language used in the sections from the point of view of all of her three main protagonists was very convincing. The story unfolds at a decent pace and is well structured, and I found the mixed-race character of Keisha and her life particularly well drawn. However, after the first few sections I began to find most of the characters rather stereotypic and thinly drawn and the plot full of distressingly familiar elements: the circumstantial evidence, the pressure from uncaring and semi-competent bosses to get a conviction, the policeman forming an attachment to a key witness which puts the case in jeopardy and plenty more. Add in the bullying, coke-fuelled, vicious bankers, the Amazing Discoveries Which Might Save The Day (which the police, of course, have missed) and so on, and it all began to feel a bit unrealistic and jaded. And I could really have done without so many of the characters learning a rather twee little Life Lesson by the end.

Claire McGowan can certainly write well and there is enough to enjoy in the book to make only three stars rather churlish, but I can't really recommend this beyond a light, disposable read.

By Maria2222 TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Charlotte and her soon-to-be husband go partying a week before their big wedding - unfortunately everything goes wrong in a haze of drinks and coke and the next day her fiancée is picked up by the police accused of murder. What follows is Charlotte's fight to convince the police of his innocence and her wake-up call on how removed she has lived from life's realities both within the relationship but also in respect of the outside world.

Keisha was at the same party with her violent and useless boyfriend who is also the father of her little daughter - who has been taken into care due to Keisha's tumultuous relationship with the father. She is a potential witness to what happened on the fateful night and her main dilemma is whether to help the rich skinny white girl or stand by the man she has loved since they were both kids.

I thought the storyline sounded interesting as the dilemmas faced by the two women as well as the stories of some of the minor characters were relevant and involving and that part of it is well done. Where I felt it went a bit wrong was the extreme stereotypes that were used for quite a few of the characters and locations and also it just moved too slow for me at times. It's not a book I'd recommend, but should you find yourself with it at hand, it's an ok read.

By G. M. Sinstadt VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Charlotte and Keisha are not strictly Upstairs Downstairs characters in television's country house sense, but it is the essence of this tale that Charlotte is 'posh white' and Keisha 'working class black.' When Charlotte's banker fiancé is charged with murder they clash, come together, fall apart and are finally reconciled.

Much will depend upon the reader's willingness to believe that Daniel Stockbridge will plead guilty to murder because he can't remember that he didn't do it. The plot also depends upon a couple of important coincidences - but then it was a device that works for Dickens so why not Claire McGowan? For many readers perhaps it will be acceptable. But there is an inescapable feeling that there are characters here - and not just the two women - who have been only thinly disguised after they were extracted from the stereotypes box. Charlotte's mother and stepfather are particularly crudely drawn.

Then there is the language. It may be fair to assume - or is it patronising? - that Keisha's language would be peppered with the f-word, but it soon makes for tedious reading. The author works too hard and eventually fails to convince.
