Product Description

Product Description

In 1982, Argentina rashly gambled that a full-scale invasion of the Falklands Islands - ownership of which had been disputed with Great Britain for over a century - would put an end to years of political wrangling. However Britain's response was to immediately dispatch a task force to recover the islands by force if necessary. The 'conflict' which followed (a formal declaration of war was never given) lasted ten weeks from Argentine invasion to British liberation, the white heat of battle using 20th century technology contrasting with bitter hand-to-hand bayonet fighting in inhospitable conditions. This title features eyewitness accounts by the participants of both sides and islanders that leave us in no doubt as to the ferocity of the combat on land, sea and in the air. Its comparison photography in colour of all the battlefields, the crash sites of the aircraft shot down, the relics and the remains, together with portraits of those who lost their lives and the battlefield memorials, serve as a graphic testimony to their endeavours, 25 years after the battle. "A Roll of Honour" lists the casualties of both sides and, for the first time, the graves of all the British fallen - both on the islands and the United Kingdom - have been visited and photographed as a lasting record of all those who made the supreme sacrifice I what is most probably Britain's last colonial war.

About the Author

Born in 1965 Gordon Ramsey is of a similar age to many of the servicemen who fought in Operation Corporate. Having watched Ian McDonald, the MoD's official spokesman, give his nightly press releases on TV and spoken to several veterans upon their return, Gordon has retained a special interest in this conflict throughout his career in publishing First and Second World War history. For over 30 years, Gordon has also avidly collected battlefield relics, medals and other military ephemera connected with After the Battle publications but his thoughts always came back to 1982 and wondering what still remained on the Falkland Islands. Amassing and devouring all the books written by veterans only increased that interest and this book is his answer. Married with two children, he lives and works near Harlow in Essex.

I had returned a visit to the Falklands last November and walked many of the battle field sites. In view of this I was very keen to get a copy of this book. It follows the series' usual format and is tremendously comprehensive. I visited after most of the clearing up had occurred, but there were still remnants from 1982, so it was good to see some older photos. It certainly put the whole matter in context and it was, for me, a very timely publication. I would add that all the Islanders I spoke to were still very grateful to the efforts of the troops in liberating them from the oppressive regime that had bene imposed. The vererans are still welcomed back with open arms when they visit. All in all, a very fitting tribute-well done Mr Ramsey
