Night Trap

Kent knows his subject at first hand and the expertise shows on the page: high stakes, pounding tension and the best dogfights put on paper. A lot of thrillers these days, you come away feeling like you’ve been in a simulator. Gordon Kent straps you into the real thing. Enjoy the ride!’
IAN RANKIN,

‘Flying, spying and dying – Night Trap is the real straight Navy stuff. Better strap yourself to the chair. I loved it.’
STEPHEN COONTS

Peacemaker

‘Tom Clancy used to have the high-tech military thriller stakes all to himself but now Gordon Kent has entered the field, and how. There’s action on all fronts with Alan Craik at the heart of it, whether it’s a carrier group in the Med confronting a rogue Russian sub commander, mounting a rescue mission for a captured CIA agent in Africa, or helping combat a high-level conspiracy in Washington. Non-stop … a smoking gun of a story.’
Northern Echo

‘Told with all the authority of inside knowledge … an absorbing tale of international skulduggery.’
Irish News

Top Hook

‘Consistently excellent … loaded with gunfights, snappy dialogue and the aerial hijinks of supersonic jet fighters. The high testosterone doses satisfy, but best is the complex and clever web of motive Kent weaves for the mole.’
Publishers Weekly

A little slow 14 Jun 2008
By N. Brett TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
I feel bad about only giving this two stars, I really do. The authors have produced a number of great stories and introduced a set of characters with depth and personality, and here they go for something a little different.
Previously we have had fast moving Navy thrillers linked into the intelligence community with Alan Craik as the main lead- here we have a spy novel featuring Jerry Piat (who we have met before in the murky world of intelligence) trying to train up a couple of people as agents to lure in a high powered arab. At the same time Craik is following up on a discrepancy in an intelligence report, not realising it will lead him towards Piat's operation.
For all the good characters and the different approach, what lets this down is a lack of pace and tension through the majority of the story and there just not enough to grab you and make you keep turning the page. As I said, I feel bad about my score because the authors have been brave in taking their story away from the Navy, but for all the thoughtful approach this sadly ends up as a weak spy thriller.

Unlike the previous books in the series , there is no military action in this one.
The writers seem to be heading down the path of concentrating on the spy game.
Having said this, the book is still very enjoyable and as well written as the others.
Two sides of the story are slowly woven together from totally opposite ends, one from the spy on the ground and the other from Craik in his new role as a Washington desk jockey.
Good stuff

By David B
Format:Hardcover
This book, the latest in an excellent series, focuses almost exclusively on the contemporary intelligence/spying world. Although the explicit jabs at Lord Cheney and his ilk were gratifying to this reader, the lack of integration of Navy air power and action into the story was disappointing and quite a let down from the previous efforts.
