Book Description

4 Oct 2011 3836526727 978-3836526722
This is a compendium of the Brothers Grimm's most beloved fairy tales, newly translated and accompanied by an array of vintage illustrations. This book brings together twenty-seven of the most beloved of the famous Grimms' fairy tales, including all the classics, such as "Cinderella", "Snow White", "Sleeping Beauty", and "Hansel and Gretel" in an all-new translation specially commissioned for this publication. Containing a painstakingly-researched selection of illustrations by some of the most famous illustrators from the 1820s to the 1950s-including golden age legend Kay Nielsen, bestselling author Gustaf Tenggren, British darlings Walter Crane and Arthur Rackham, and giants of nineteenth century German illustration Gustav Sus, Heinrich Leutemann, and Viktor Paul Mohn, as well as many new discoveries-this compilation also includes beautiful silhouettes culled from original publications from the 1870s and 1920s that run throughout the entire layout. Interlaced in the book are also dozens of entirely new silhouettes designed and created especially for this book. In addition to the tales, the book also includes an introduction to the Grimms' legacy, brief introductory texts for each tale, and extended artists' biographies in the appendix. For adults and children alike, this classic addition to any library brings to life the never-ending magic of the Grimms' fairy tales and their delightful illustrations. The following fairy tales are featured in the book: "The Frog Prince"; "The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats"; "Little Brother and Little Sister"; "Rapunzel"; "Hansel and Gretel"; "The Fisherman and His Wife"; "The Brave Little Tailor"; "Cinderella"; "Mother Holle"; "Little Red Riding Hood"; "The Bremen Town Musicians"; "The Devil with Three Golden Hairs"; "The Shoemaker and the Elves"; "Tom Thumb's Travels"; "Sleeping Beauty"; "Snow White"; "Rumpelstiltskin"; "The Three Feathers"; "The Golden Goose"; "Jorinde and Joringel"; "The Goose Girl"; "The Twelve Dancing Princesses"; "The Star Coins"; "Snow White and Red Nose"; "The Hare and the Hedgehog"; "Puss n' Boots"; and, "The Golden Key".

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Edition of Classic Fairytales 19 Feb 2012
By Quinn
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a beautiful collectors edition of The Fairy Tales of The Brothers Grimm. The book is a purple material hardback with lovely gold lettering. The artwork on the front and back covers is simple and bright but it detracts a little from the old style of the book as they are actually stickers applied to the cover directly. Unfortunately there is no dust jacket or sleeve to protect the book but I think it looks quite striking without one.
The fairytales themselves are relatively short but each one is quite wonderful to read. Although you might be familiar with some of the tales such as Snow White due to modern Disney interpretations these stories are the original creepy fairytales rooted in morality rather than 'living happily ever after'. Each story has a gold title page and is accompanied by illustrations that are as diverse and interesting as the fairytales. The artwork ranges from the 1950s to more modern pieces and will appeal to both adults and children.
The stories in this edition are as follows:
The Frog Prince, The Wolf and The Seven Little Goats, Little Brother and Little Sister, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, The Fisherman and His Wife, The Brave Little Tailor, Cinderella, Mother Holle, Little Red Riding Hood, The Bremen Town Musicians, The Devil With The Three Golden Hairs, The Shoemaker and The Eleves, Tom Thumb's Travels, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Rumpelstiltskin, The Three Feathers, The Golden Goose, Jorinda and Joringel, The Goose Girl, The Twelve Dancing Princesses, The Star Coins, Snow White and Rose Red, The Hare and The Hedgehog, Puss 'n Boots and The Golden Key.
Overall I think this is a wonderful and well-presented edition with a huge selection of fairytales to be enjoyed at any age - I would definitely recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Corker 27 Oct 2011
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
Many modern readers believe that the Brothers Grimm were all sweetness and light, usually as their tales have been bought and translated to the modern medium of film by companies like Disney, for those of us raised with the older material, you'll more than be aware of the darker and, at times, quite scary tales that we were raised on that contained hidden morals and messages for the reader to learn.

This title by Taschen is a wonderful new translation of the original text (now celebrating its second centenary) by Matthew Price, picked up with artwork from some of the original stories alongside some modern masters to create a truly unique experience. It's dark, its foreboding but most of all it's a book that children will love (after all who doesn't like a scare just before lights out? Add to this some insight into the stories for the adult reader and this is a book that will beloved for generations. An absolute cracker of a title that will appeal to the child in all of us and a book that I feel will make one of the most amazing gifts this Christmas. Magic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Beautiful Book I Own 11 Jun 2012
By Jane
Format:Hardcover
I'm 16 and I've always been fascinated by fairy stories. I bought this book when I was in London back in November. It was an impulse buy and one of the best books I have ever bought. The illustrations are absolutely incredible and so so pretty! My favourite illustrations are the ones for Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, and Snow White; though most are beautifully illustrated. The book contains the original versions of the stories, so can be very dark, which is eye opening in contrast to Disney or to other children's fairy tale books. What's unique about this book is that the stories are all illustrated by different people and the versions of the stories are told by different people. Lots of the illustrations are very old and from long out of print editions of the stories, which is fascinating. There's also a biography of the artists at the back and some background on each story at the start of every tale. This book is incredible, even if you just want to look at the pictures it is worth buying. I massively recommend this to all ages.
