All of the excellent stories are here, written in Lang's succinct and evocative style, from the favourites such as the 'Twelve Dancing Princesses' to the less well known 'Death of Koshchei the Deathless'. Certainly suitable for older children with the twists in the tales. However, the book is plain text without H J Ford's wonderful illustrations, which would lift it from being a very good book to something magical.
There are stories in this book from all over the world and I hadn't heard or read a single one of them which was lovely. A fresh new set of fairy tales can't be a bad thing.
These little books are all great but I do rather lament the lack of illustrations as another reviewer pointed out. Still, as the books are free on Kindle I suppose you shouldn't really have the nerve to complain.
Yes, I know it's a kids book. Yes I know it's silly old fairy stories.
Well few of them start with "once upon a time" and even less end with "and they all lived happily ever after."
Really, it's a charming collection of European fairy stories that takes no time at all to read (especially out loud). I have a feeling that I'm going to learn many of the tales by heart since it's become a bedtime favourite.
After reading a few books that were a bit hard work, this has been a pleasure. "Getting older is inevitable - growing up is optional" :) Woohoo!
