As a serious fan of short stories, I approached the Farenheit Twins with gusto. Churning my way through the book in a couple of days I was left feeling elated, frustrated, disappointed and confused. However, since collections of short stories have a tendency to reveal writers' better and also lesser efforts, this book is fairly sterotypical for a short story collection.
Many of the stories are great examples of how to thread a taught storyline through a wealth of prose. Some of the stories are examples of good prose with a meandering story but an ungratifying end. A couple of the stories are prosaic but pointless, as though the author is stretching his ability to write but not his ability to tell a story.
Nonetheless, throughout the book the prose is neither overwhleming nor sparse, which gives the collection a well written charm. The stories themselves are dark, mischievous and fun, and while some show Faber at his worse, the collection is an excellent example of how to woo readers with the short form.
If you're into contemporary short stories or something different then this is close to being a must read; if you're into Michel Faber, then you should approach this collection knowing that while he's an excellent writer, he's not always an excellent story teller.

I first read and liked MIchel Faber's book Under the Skin. This collection of short stories did keep me intrerested. Several left me hanging and I thought they might be first chapetrs for books that did not gel. I wnated to see more. There were a couple I though felt pointless and almost unpleasant for the sake of it. But I liked this book and would buy others on the strength of it.

I got the sample download of this on my Kindle and bought the book full of excitement for an unusual and interesting story which was developing. Only to discover that there was no conclusion to that story. Nor to any of the other stories in the book. This is very disappointing as these stories all start so well but then just stop. Another reviewer I read since has said it is like a collection of the first chapters of a series of different novels. And that is very much the case. As a wannabe writer myself I know its quite easy to come up with an idea but its quite hard to make that idea span into a fully formed narrative. That is where this book fails. Its like all the half-hearted attempts to start a novel or a proper short story all dumped into one book in a lazy attempt to spin some money out of them. I feel cheated. I've got a little over half way through and can't be bothered to read any more of it. Its a real shame as there is some excellent promise in the fragments of stories in the book, sadly they are not fulfilled. This was an utter waste of my money.
