Review

'Outstanding...Smoky's fierce first-person narrative and Sarah's eerie diary excerpts, supplemented by a great cast, lift this scary thriller far above the usual serial-killer norm' (Publishers Weekly, starred review 20060620)

'Terrifically good, terrifically scary . . . very hard to put down' (San Francisco Chronicle on SHADOW MAN 20060620)

'SHADOW MAN grabs you by the throat and yanks you along for a hell of a scary ride. A spellbinding read from first page to last.' (Faye Kellerman 20060620)

'Coldly, stunningly brilliant. Move over Thomas Harris, Mcfadyen has brought a new game to town.' (Lisa Gardner on SHADOW MAN 20060620)

'As humane as it is violent...Barrett's anger, pain and determination infuse the novel with a raw passion...it will be among the best crime fiction you will read this year' (Washington Post on SHADOW MAN 20060530)

'SHADOW MAN is one of the most powerful and authentic portrayals of a serial killer and the people who hunt them I have ever read. It kept me riveted right to the last page. Cody Mcfadyen is the real thing.' (John Douglas, author of the #1 bestseller MINDHUNTER: Inside the F.B.I.'s Serial Crime Unit )

'A truly talented author' (The Sunday Times, Australia )

'Disturbing ... a promising debut for Mcfadyen, who combines many conventions of the genre but with far more exquisite, intricate results than the norm . . . Pack[s] a visceral punch' (Publishers Weekly )

'The wildest night ride I have been on for quite a while...By the time you finish reading this book you'll be running on adrenalin you never knew you had. If you're sick of books about serial killers, SHADOW MAN is the cure. Mcfadyen's writing and characterization run long, deep and true. And, by the way, he is beyond scary. Not to be missed' (Bookreporter.com )

'Authentic...handled well with some unexpected twists and turns. Mcfadyen has drawn Barrett and her fellow FBI members tenderly and intricately' (Shots Magazine on SHADOW MAN )

'I'm still reeling after reading this high-octane, heart-pumping FBI thriller...Brilliant. But not for the squeamish' (****Good Reading, Australia )

'This is one of the best serial killer novels that I've read. It's up there with the early Patricia Cornwell novels, Primal Fear and The Silence of the Lambs - a stunning first novel' (Manly Daily )

'Mcfadyen has managed to deliver something fresh. His style of narration sucks the reader in from the first sentence and the story has enough plot twists to keep you intrigued to the last page. A superb debut novel, hopefully a sign of things to come from a truly talented author. In a word: chilling' (Herald Sun, Australia )

'If you like to be scared so witless you hold your breath for pages at a time, SHADOW MAN won't disappoint' (New Idea, Australia )

In McFadyen's second novel, FBI Special Agent Smoky Barrett is back, and is after a serial killer seeking revenge for what he believes is justice.

The plot is chilling and emotive, the crimes vicious and unsettling.

At first, I felt it was slow as Smoky's past and other main characters are described for the benefit of those who have not read Shadow Man. However, as the characters are developed during the course of the novel, I felt Smoky's character was given real depth and an excellent portrayal of the minds of those chasing killers.

I didn't get the same sense of excitement as when reading Shadow Man. All the same this is an excellent hard-hitting thriller. The style of using the first person, diary narrative and forensic/investigative detail was excellent and balanced out the shocking and emotive moments.

Read it with the door locked and all on the lights on!

I never thought i'd find an author better than Mark Billingham, but my god this one's done it.. big time! This book is absolutly fantastic!! But once you've read it, you'll probably want to read the other one, so i'd suggest doing it in the right order and reading Shadow Man first (which is also brilliant!!!).

i wont say anything about the plot - wouldnt want to give it away, but as with the first book, this has the ability to make you cry and also scare the pants of you! You'll go to read a chapter before bed and grudgingly put the book down when you realise its 3am and you've been reading non-stop for 4 hours... you'll finish it tommoro!

Obviously everyones different and likes different things (though i dont think anyone could not like this book!) so other authors I like are Mark Billingham and Peter James. I didnt like Stephen Booth. Hope that helps, but even if you're vice versa on my faves, i'd still suggest reading this book to you, and anyone else who'll listen!!!

Enjoy!

Since reading McFadyens first book 'Shadow Man' about a year ago I've been eagerly anticipating 'The Face of Death'. I didnt think it could be as good as his first book but this is definately better. The crimes are so clever and calculating and definately brutal. It's told in 2 stories really, 1 angle being Agent Smoky Barrett and the other being the story of Sarah Kingsley told through her diary.

The characters really are the driving force in McFadyens books. He has an undeniable talent of making the readers really care for the characters and making them so lifelike and real. This book really is great, well worth the read but make sure you read Shadow Man first.
