I have read almost all of the Mamur Zapt books and this is up to the usual high standard. For anyone who does not know, the stories are set in Egypt in the period leading up to the First World War. The Mamur Zapt is head of the political police and, since they really control the country, is British. A lot of background detail is given about the politics of the time and how people lived, but never in a way which stops the flow of the story. This book is set just as preparations for the War are being made and raises issues about inter-racial relationships. I always come away feeling I have learnt something from these books but only while enjoying a good story.
