It is often hard to know where to start with the greats of Jazz: huge back catalogues, numerous best of's, re-packaging of the same material, long career's during changing times. However, when it comes to Sidney Bechet I would reccomend this album above all others.
Bechet is often seen as ones of the greats of Jazz but is perhaps less well known than others. This is probably because his sound can divide listeners: his use of vibratto can be seen as excessive. Whether you like his sound or not he has that rare thing in Jazz - a unique style that is instantly recognisable.
One of the main reasons why this album is so good is that it was recorded in the 50's so the songs are longer and allow more soloing time than earlier recordings, whilst the sound quality is superb. The songs are all early Jazz classics done mainly in an upbeat New Orleans style. The soloing and group inter-play are superb throughout and trumpeters Sidney de Paris and Jonah Jones stand out.
The material is taken from two seperate sessions that employed two different groups. This allows an interesting comparison of different styles. The earlier sessions utilises a bassist who plays in an early jazz style that involves slapping the bass strings. The later session has Walter Page on bass - the Count Basie bassist - who was involved in developing the walking bass which might be considered one of the bigger developments in jazz bass playing. The later session therefore sounds more 'modern'.
Overall this a great album and one that I have found good to play to people who profess to be ignorant of Jazz but like blues etc. It also includes my favourite version of All of me with a lovely OTT trumpet solo.

surprising - a broad spectrum of "dixieland" styles

Although this disk could be referred to as "dixieland" it strikes me as having a wide spectrum of different approaches that musical style. Although I like dixieland music, I generally get bored after 2 of 3 cuts because I find that the music played by any one group is often stylistically repetitious. I was really surprised by this disk because there were so many different approaches to the music. Each time a new cut would start I found myself paying close attention to what they were doing. It never became boring background music.

MILESTONE IN TRADITIONAL JAZZ

This recording is truly a milestone Traditional Jazz recording. No, this is a milestone Jazz recording ! I can't urge you enough to buy this recording !! This is really special. You will be in tears after hearing and think you might not have not made this purchase. DO IT !!!!!!!

Bechet's NY farewell

Sidney's last 2 recordings for Blue Note being placed on 1 CD makes good sense for the collector. This is powerful and exuberant jazz and Jonah leaves his mute alone. He had to if he wanted to be heard. If you want to know what I mean, listen to him on Rose of the Rio Grande in both takes. It's also nice to hear Buddy Weed, a light fingered pianist, in the rhythm section. As mentioned in another review nice backgrounds and interesting routines add to the interest.
