valuable reading 7 May 2012
By ashley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Too tired at the moment for a decent review, and, admittedly have not read this book in years. However, I read it several times in my late-twenties and it deeply impacted me. Even now, I can recall so many of Garber's ideas, which were original to me at the time--ideas which have been welded to my heart, affecting my worldview, no doubt for the better. Garber is wise and right on, with a compassionate and empathetic heart for those in that age range, or, for anyone who is concerned or working with that population.
I certainly wish I had read this book at 18 rather than 28. Perhaps I would have had a more appropriate take on life and my place in it. Perhaps I would have been spared lots of academic, philosophical and spiritual pain...in exchange for more of a joy in the journey during the university years in a more realistic, grounded, yet truly exciting way.

christian angle on the social aspect of faithfulness. 23 Dec 2010
By suburban dissident - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Garber makes three key points for those looking to live a meaningful Christian life in the modern world: cultivate a coherent worldview, find a teacher to learn from, and develop and community with whom to live out that worldview. The rest of the book focuses on explaining the why and how of his findings.

_Fabric_ is helpful for a few reaons: (1) it engages with a broad literature and diverse fields of study, (2) it is well thought out and coherently argued, (3) it is very accessible. While the "study" he does and the interviews he draws on are far from methodologically rigorous, the book is a good first step. It is not the last word on these issues but is rather a book that can be see as generally readable and leads into possibly deeper study of the issues Garber address. One should look at this as a springboard into works by James Davison Hunter, Christian Smith, Peter Berger, and other more academic Christian thinkers who get at the nuts a bolts and more in depth philosophical aspects of what Garber hints at.

I would recommend this specifically for late high school students, college students, and those involved with student ministries. If you are wanting to develop comprehensive theories about the role of beliefs in society, this won't be particularly useful. But, again, as a ministry tool, Garber's work gets at some fundamental questions and makes a strong case for living coherently by weaving together belief and behavior.

Absolutely awful 26 April 2012
By Daniel - college student - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is absolutely TERRIBLE! Trying to navigate the confusing settings and weird wordings has been like trying to navigate a map that doesn't come with cardinal directions. As a college student that graduated high school with a 3.8 GPA and a 1230 on the SAT, I consider myself pretty competent when it comes to reading, and this book has totally baffled me. There is no logical order of events or anything of the sort. Often times, I wonder who the narrator is, as it doesn't seem like the same person wrote all of the chapters. My professor tried to use it as a tool to teach Interpersonal Communication which is has literally NOTHING to do with. Awful book. Confusing, misguiding, and all around boring.
