There are times when only a pocket guide will do and for those wanting quick and easy reference guide, this is THE book. Rupert Christiansen gives a brief history of opera and explains how national styles have shaped opera like no other genre in classical music. He deals with the most pertinent operas in the repertoire, in excess of 100, though perhaps a little disappointingly leaves out Delibes. Not to worry though, as Christiansen's structured and user-friendly entries for each opera are brilliantly well-written, concise, highly informative and incredibly inspiring.
An excellent book which can be enjoyed by newcomers to opera and people with some knowledge of opera. I can honestly say I will keep returning to this book for a long time, and I doubt I could have said that if had chosen a more sizeable, less manageable introduction to opera.
