Product Description

"Plot twists galore, relentless suspense and expert insights to satisfy anyone fascinated by today's financial crisis."—Culture TF1

From Lagos to London, by way of the Faroe Islands and St. Petersburg, an investigation turns deadly. The head of the Nigerian fraud squad is evacuated from Lagos by secret service operatives. Meanwhile a junior prosecutor in Nice probes the mysterious death of the wife of a powerful banker and a crusading journalist in St. Petersburg pursues a corrupt oligarch and his criminal business empire.

The paths of all three cross in London, where they find themselves embroiled in violent events obviously linked to financial and political interests and hunted by the oligarch's men, the Western secret services and goons sent by Nigerian oil magnates.

A satirical, intelligent, and fast-paced thriller set in the world of high finance and low politics, The Eyes of Lira Kazan is co-written by Eva Joly, a prominent former prosecuting judge in Paris and a candidate in the 2012 French Presidential elections.

Eva Joly is Norwegian born and this is her first novel.

Judith Perrignon is a prize-winning essayist and the author of a number of historical and other literary works, including La nuit du Fouquet's avec Ariane Chemin. This is her second novel after the much lauded Les Chagrins, published in France in 2011.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Thriller 28 Oct 2012
By Simon Clarke TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an excellent international thriller,co-authored by two
French women, one an ex-journalist,the other a current Member of
the European Parliament(Green Party).
Nwankwo,is a prosecuting lawyer in Nigeria with the thankless
task of fighting fraud in that country. When his colleague is
murdered, and there is a threat to his own life ,he flees to
England. Felix is a junior prosecutor in Nice, where when trying
to investigate the suspicious death of the wife of a wealthy Faroese
banker,he is impeded by powerful forces from making further enquiries.
Lira Kazan is a brave compaigning Russian journalist, who is obsessed
with the corrupt practices of an oligarch,Louchsky.
The three come together in London, and with their lives in great danger,
and faced with cover-ups and subterfuge from the highest eschelons,
set out to expose the corruption.
This first-rate thriller ,partly topical,partly satirical,revealing
three characters of immense bravery and probity acting against
seemingly impossible odds.Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars powerful satire 11 Sep 2012
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
In Abuja, Nigeria, following the assassination of his friend and colleague Uche, fraud squad investigator Nwanko needs to get his wife and children out of the country. The British government offer to take him and his family safely away if Nwanko agrees to say nothing about the corrupt Nigerian government he has been investigating for the last few years. Realizing his choice is death for his loved ones and himself or keeping quiet, he agrees to leave Lagos pretending he knows nothing

In Nice, the wife of an affluent Faroese banker drowns. The police insist an accident occurred but junior prosecutor Felix thinks otherwise.

In St. Petersburg, Lira the investigative journalist understands the hazards of her pursuits and especially fears for the safety of her child. However she diligently probes the business dealings of wealthy Russian Louchsky.

These three dedicated individuals will converge in London as Nigerian oil and undercover operatives target them for elimination.

The Eyes of Lira Kazan is a powerful satire that mocks the marriage between dirty money and "values" spouting politicians. Using hyperbole, Eva Joly and Judith Perrignon insist the affluent silence the crusaders by threatening innocent family members. However the keys to this engaging crime thriller is how haunted Nwanko, Felix and Lira feel about the potential assaults on their loved ones from mercenaries and untruth spins about each of them by the dirty money crowd.

4.0 out of 5 stars No justice for the blind 30 Dec 2012
By Sandy Harcourt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A well-written, well-translated, fast-paced, realistic thriller. I'm still thinking about it weeks after reading it.
A brave, powerless few attempt to bring to justice the ruthless 0.01%, the plutocratic billionaires of the world who will do anything to grab power and hold on to it. The lethal action starts in Nigeria, but quickly moves across the world, ending finally in London.
Neither Lira Kazan of the title, nor any of the others fighting the corruption of the massively rich, are anywhere near as capable as Stieg Larsson's Lisbeth Salander, so does the denouement taste more like Le Carre's `The Constant Gardener' or Larsson's `Millennium' trilogy?
