The Wheel of Time sequence is my absolute favourite in fantasy.
This book is the very first in the sequence. Unfortunately, Jordan tried to give the first hundred pages a "Lord of the Rings" style, which means that things do take a while to get going at first, but after a little while, the story takes off and doesn't stop. A word of warning - the series will go on until book 10 at least - and probably up to book 12, so make sure you have room on your shelves.
Every time you reread the books, you can see more details, and the propehecie and foretellings scattered through the text can someties give ou a glimpse of where the tale is heading, but there are always surprises.
The basic mythos of the book - the Wheel of time, the pattern of an age, and the concept of ta'veran - people destined to change the world, but whose lives are not wholly under their own control - gives the best justification for prophecy and free will I've ever met.
But don't take my word for it - try it yourself.
