Product Description

I was looking down, watching the shark come. It seemed to swell up in size as it rushed towards me. Every detail was burned into my mind in those frantic seconds. I saw the hog's snout with the two slotted nostrils, the golden eyes with the black pupils like arrowheads, the broad blue back from which stood the tall executioner's blade of the dorsal fin.' Harry Fletcher, a man with a chequered past, has reformed and is making an honest living as a charter skipper fishing for big game in the seductive waters of the Indian Ocean. Suddenly men from the world of violence Harry has put behind him overturn his good intentions, involving him in a hectic race to recover a fabulous treasure from an ancient wreck. 'Wilbur Smith is one of the benchmarks against whom others are compared' The Times

This was the first book of Smiths i had read, and i found it impossible to put down. From the first page, the characters are made so real that you immediatly care about them, and feel the need to find out what happens. Someof the action scenes are so gripping, it feels like you are watching a great movie, and Smiths writing is so wonderfully descriptive, you can really picture the action, and sympathise with the emotions of the characters. A fantastic read.

Smith breaks from his usual fare of good, butformulaic series books, and shows that he is perfectly capable of pulling off the stand-alone novel with style. Well-written and with a good plot, this will keep you turning pages. Smith's main advantage over the likes of jack higgins is his strong story telling abilities and excellent use of language, both evident in this book.

Format:Paperback
Harry Fletcher lives a quiet life on St Mary's Island and he takes charters on board "Wave Dancer" for fishing and diving. Angelo and Chubby are his two assistants. But the inoffensive Harry once used to be called Harry Bruce and he used to practice the art of violence and sudden death in Malaya, Vietnam, the Congo and Biatra. Furthermore he used to lift complete collections of gold coins in the British Museum and cut diamonds in Amsterdam and to transport hundreds of millions of dollars worth of gold bars from Switzerland to Rome.
One day three suspicious looking men, Charley Anderson, Mike Guthric and Jimmy North, want to hire Harry's boat claiming that they want "to do a little exploring" and that they need a full array of scuba diving and salvage equipment. Then they hand Harry a chart showing that they are interested in an area thirty miles north of the mouth of the Rovuma River. What are these men after? When they recognise Harry as "the gold heist from Rome", he senses that the stakes are high and that he is sitting in the game with "big boys" once again... One of the best adventure novel by Wilbur Smith.

Dont be fooled by reprints
This was presented as a new book launch with an opportunity to pre-book.
In fact it was just a reprint of a 20 year old issue.

excellent story up to wilbur smith's usual standard concerning the discovery of an ancient wreck, recovering the lost artefacts, outwitting the villains

Tense, gripping, adventure story
This is my favourite of Wilbur Smith's novels. It's easy to read, and after the first few pages of 'scene-setting' you'll find it hard to put down. Read more
