Book Description

18 July 2013 Sigma Force 9 (Book 9)

The crash of a U.S. military research satellite in the remote wilds of Mongolia triggers an explosive search for the valuable cargo it holds: a code-black physics project connected to the study of dark energy, the energy connected to the birth of our universe. But the last blurry image from the falling satellite captures a chilling sight: a frightening look into the future, a view of a smoldering eastern seaboard of the United States in utter ruin.

At the Vatican, a mysterious package arrives for the head of Pontifical ancient studies, sent by a colleague who had vanished a decade earlier. It contains two strange artifacts: a skull scrawled with ancient Aramaic and a tome bound in human skin. DNA testing reveals both are from Genghis Khan - the long-dead Mongol king whose undiscovered tomb is rumoured to hold the vast treasures and knowledge of a lost ancient empire.

Commander Gray Pierce, and Sigma - joined by a pair of Vatican historians - race to uncover a truth tied to the fall of the Roman Empire, to a mystery bound in the roots of Christianity's origins, and to a weapon hidden for centuries that holds the fate of humanity.

More About the Author

JAMES ROLLINS is the New York Times bestselling author of international thrillers, translated into more than forty languages. His Sigma series has been lauded as one of the "top crowd pleasers" (New York Times) and one of the "hottest summer reads" (People Magazine). In each novel, acclaimed for its originality, Rollins unveils unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets--and he does it all at breakneck speed and with stunning insight.

James Rollins decided to become a writer as a boy immersed in the scientific adventures of Doc Savage, the wonders of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and pulps such as The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger. He honed his storytelling skills early, spinning elaborate tales that were often at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters.

Although his talent emerged and grew, writing was not James' original profession. Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, he embarked on a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary. This hands-on knowledge of medicine and science helps shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins books apart.

The exotic locales of James Rollins novels have emerged as a hybrid between imagination, research, and James' extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, as well as New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Recent travel includes book tours and stops across the country and several European nations to meet readers and give talks, seminars, and media interviews.

In recent years, much of James' travel has involved meeting readers in small and large groups, at writing and fan conferences, and even aboard seagoing "seminars." James' mentoring temperament and coaching skills have made him a sought-out writing instructor and guest speaker for workshops, symposia, conventions, and other forums throughout the country. He is among the core faculty of the annual Maui Writer's Conference and Retreat.

James Rollins is the author of seven thrillers in the bestselling Sigma Force series (Sandstorm, Map of Bones, Black Order, The Judas Strain, The Last Oracle, The Doomsday Key, and The Devil Colony, Bloodline); six individual adventure thrillers; the blockbuster movie novelization, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull; and the Jake Ransom middle grade series (Jake Ransom and the Skull King's Shadow, Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx, and more coming in 2013). The ninth Sigma Force adventure, The Eye of God, is coming in Summer 2013.

3.0 out of 5 stars Getting a bid tired 15 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have always looked forward to the Sigma Force books and bought them as soon as possible, but for the first time I was disappointed. I think the series is running out of steam. Unusually this was a predictable plot with the same outcome. I found it difficult to get into and really after all this time, the romantic moments were lost on me.

I am hoping that the author now concentrates on the characters her developed in Deep Fathom which I thoroughly enjoyed and was more like the early Sigma Force Novels.

Havingread a lot of Rollins previous SIGMA series I was looking forward toa good ripping yarn as a holiday read

I felt this book wasnt up to his normal standards and had got a bit formulaic

Trying to give a bit more depth to some of the darker characters in the series didnt work

The new Characters seemed weak and the myltiple story lines only just hung together

5.0 out of 5 stars Dan Brown wishes he could write this well.... 18 July 2013
By Parm TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Review:
James Rollins is the Thriller writer all thriller fans should read IMHO, all the hype that exists around Dan Brown seems even more unwarranted when you read the quality of story plot, pace, action and adventure that he publishes year in year out. Some of the earlier novels (listed below under Novels) can to some go to the extreme of credulity, but they are still so well written and so much fun they are addictive.

The Sigma series are that well written, but instead of stretching credulity they inspire, they give a view of technology to aspire to. So many people look at books like this and think "far fetched" when an author pushes the boundaries of technology and fiction it needs to be done right and Rollins always does this with style, look at early star trek, some of the idea (like personal communicators) came to pass (Mobile phones). Look at advances in Rollins books like Monks prosthetic hand, and do an on-line search of the next gen prosthetics, Monks hand has been around for a few years now, the idea behind it so deep so detailed, and this is just one of the ideas brought forth by Rollins wonderful imagination, this imagination is so real so detailed, from the overall plot down to the nitty gritty fine details.

In this latest book Rollins takes us on a journey through history and through the future of Space, time and dark matter. The concepts and the research for this book must have absorbed him for months. The introduction of some of the Greatest/ darkest men in History was wonderful, Genghis and Attila combined with St Thomas. How does an imagination come up with a plot like that astounds me. Add in the fine detail of families, loves won, loves lost and some very brave writing by the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Conspiracy galore 30 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Take The X-Files and mash in a little Twilight Zone. Baste in a touch of Tom Clancy, and marinate in A Gathering of Twine (The Spirals of Danu) (and I'm really torn as to which one is the better "end of days" book because they are both superb), and you get The Eye of God.

This has everything - science, religion, haunting sub plots, adrenaline... everything.

This is a thinking man's action book with thrills, spills, and enough shocks and crises to keep you hooked until the last page.

I couldn't put it down.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hit or miss? 31 May 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Space/time dimensions come to Sigma Force. Will the asteroid destroy earth (USA east coast) or can Sigma find the missing relics to avoid catastrophe? A bit of both as it turns out. Hmmm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! 22 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the latest book in the Sigma Force series. The eye of god is an American satelite which crashes to earth after getting too close to a comet and being affected by dark energy. That in itself is enough of a plot to bring in Sigma Force to investigate yet this story has other plot lines which include Ghengis Khan, the Vatican and St Thomas. It seems incredible that these things can be linked in any way and yet this is Rollins' skill! He writes so intelligently and with such detailed research that it is difficult for the reader to separate fact from pure fiction. But even this is covered with an appendix at the end of the book! I LOVE this series - if you haven't read these books, start at the beginning and work your way through them all!
