Product Description

Review

"All parents should read this book, especially those with children who are out of control. Ross Greene presents a loving, rational, and research-based approach to dealing with problems that most parents have either felt were their own fault or were unsolvable. I could not recommend this book more highly."-- Edward Hallowell, M.D.

Product Description

What′s an explosive child? A child who responds to routine problems with extreme frustration-crying, screaming, swearing, kicking, hitting, biting, spitting, destroying property, and worse. A child whose frequent, severe outbursts leave his or her parents feeling frustrated, scared, worried, and desperate for help. Most of these parents have tried everything-reasoning, explaining, punishing, sticker charts, therapy, medication-but to no avail. They can′t figure out why their child acts the way he or she does; they wonder why the strategies that work for other kids don′t work for theirs; and they don′t know what to do instead.

Dr. Ross Greene, a distinguished clinician and pioneer in the treatment of kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges, has worked with thousands of explosive children, and he has good news: these kids aren′t attention-seeking, manipulative, or unmotivated, and their parents aren′t passive, permissive pushovers. Rather, explosive kids are lacking some crucial skills in the domains of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, and problem solving, and they require a different approach to parenting.

Throughout this compassionate, insightful, and practical book, Dr. Greene provides a new conceptual framework for understanding their difficulties, based on research in the neurosciences. He explains why traditional parenting and treatment often don′t work with these children, and he describes what to do instead. Instead of relying on rewarding and punishing, Dr. Greene′s Collaborative Problem Solving model promotes working with explosive children to solve the problems that precipitate explosive episodes, and teaching these kids the skills they lack.

As a parent of an explosive child for 7 years, and a teacher of special education for 22, I highly recommend The Explosive Child. Dr. Greene has been able to help me transcend years of my own frustration to see this type of child through brand new eyes. The book not only presents a plan for prioritizing goals, it teaches the parent how to instruct the child in negotiation, adjusting to disappointment, and handling frustration. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, it teaches adults how to reduce frustration in the child's environment, so explosive episodes are less likely to occur. Actual dialogue and scenarios from therapy sessions are used to illustrate these methods. Dr. Greene's subtle humor makes this an easy read with practical principles that can be implemented immediately.

I can't really do more than echo the praises of other reviewers, but I wanted to add that this excellent book will be also be indispensible for many parents of children with autism, Asperger's syndrome or PDD-NOS. Most of the examples in the book focus on kids with ADHD or Tourette's, and the book only mentions PDD very briefly, but its wise advice would be equally relevant to verbal kids with autistic spectrum conditions who have rage attacks/tantrums, as many do.

I'm speaking from personal experience here - I have Asperger's syndrome (a mild autistic spectrum condition), and, looking back, as a child I definitely fitted the "inflexible-explosive" patterns described in the book. This book encapsulates all the wisdom my exhausted parents had to learn the hard way.

I already know of at least one parent of a teenager with AS who is currently finding the book absolutely lifesaving, and I've had to buy several copies to lend to people.

It's thoughtful, humane, and very practical. Very highly recommended.

An essential guide 25 May 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This guide has really made a difference to our lives. I had read other books which described time outs and other ways of punishing kids. This guy has really understood what makes these kids tick, and his understanding has made me understand what we were doing wrong as parents.

I couldn't recommend this book enough and will be buying copies for other parents who have these same kind of inflexible, explosive kids. It's a lifesaver.
