Commander Clark Patterson and several officers in the Freeground Military are ejected from regular service when a desire to look beyond Freeground Nation’s borders is proven by an oppressive government. They are assigned dangerous missions by a special Intelligence Oversight Group.

If Commander Patterson and his people complete these missions, they’ll gain their freedom from Oversight and have the opportunity to start over in a tumultuous galaxy. Patterson’s fascination with another crew who left Freeground years before and managed to survive serves as a destination, but will they survive to reach it?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great addition to a great series 24 April 2012
By Bry
Format:Kindle Edition
I was dubious at first, but, because i am still waiting for 7, i bought it anyway. I wasn't disappointed. Still a few, minor, editing errors but it doesn't detract from a good read that sets things up for fracture, i hope! If you've been reading the series, buying this is a no brainer!

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting step forwards 26 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
One of the issues with any travellers saga is that the reader loses touch with what is happening back at home base. 'The Expendable Few' is a neat way of getting around this problem while expanding on the central plot line. In this book we learn about what has been going on back at Freeground and also get an update on what has happened to some of the the planets and peoples that have been encountered in the main books.

If you have not read any of the Spinward Fringe books then don't start here. You need to have some background knowledge for the plot twists to make sense. But if you are eagerly awaiting the next Spinward Fringe book then do not skip this one. You'll enjoy it and there are significant plot developments in this book.

I really liked 'The Expendable Few'. It is a great solution to a technical problem. It is so much better than a dry historical foreword to the next story. I congratulate Randolph Lalonde for finding such an entertaining way to extend my knowledge of his universe while preparing me for the next book in the Spinward Fringe series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A spin-off the Fringe 28 July 2012
By Dave E
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Great to have a new story based on the Fringe Universe. New characters in a side plot, but still firmly within the framework of the main series.

As well written as the other books, and a real page turner - good to see some of the alien races being 'fleshed out' a little, and it has left me wondering how the author will incorporate the new characters (those who survived!) into the main story. Can't wait!

Come on Randolph! :o)

3.0 out of 5 stars Warning: Written in present tense. 29 April 2013
By Dani
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I cannot read fiction in present tense. It just feels awkward and unnatural. Loved the other books in the broadcast series but couldn't Even finish the first chapter of this. Why was this written in present tense when the rest are normal?

3.0 out of 5 stars so-so 28 Mar 2013

Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed his spinward fringe series a lot but this one seemed to have really lost its shine and felt more like a paint by numbers exercise in writing.

I am often disappointed by how predictable some plots can be. Not with this book. I had a few surprises that I did not see coming. That's a pleasure in it's self. Read more

Opens up several new possible story lines and there are signs that the Spinward Fringe books are now being edited! Usual good story with pace and real imagination.
