Book Description

1 Mar 2010
The Exorcist's Handbook approaches the subject of exorcism in clear, practical, and non-religious terms-with a generous serving of humor. It covers all issues that are important to an exorcist, including various methods of exorcism, death work, the removal of curses, the types of beings an exorcist could possibly encounter, methods of protection, and self maintenance advice for the exorcist.

More About the Author

I have been teaching and writing on occult/ Western Mystery themes in the USA and UK for the last two decades and have been involved in magic/occult for 35years. I was birthed out of the cooking pot of the magical city of Bradford complete with its ritual lodges, Theosophical Society, Golden Dawn Temple and strange population.
In the past I have been, among other things, a classical ballet dancer, coach and choreographer, college teacher, stand up poet, arts officer, exorcist, occultist, waitress, cleaner, gardener, director of a federal parrot rescue, Indian Rez bar tender, prep cook in an Haitian/Cuban cafe/bar and tree planter/forestry worker for the Salish And Kootani tribal forestry division in Montana. I now live back in the UK in a wee Dartmoor village and spend my time writing, painting and freaking out the locals.

I must say that The Exorcist's Handbook (Josephine McCarthy) is one of the most stimulating and thought provoking books I have read for a while! This book is all written from first-hand experience and contains many insightful anecdotal examples of genuine spirit infestation and subsequent exorcisms.

The Exorcist's Handbook is one of those rare gems that exude the kind of practical knowledge only acquired through many years of exhaustive work in a unique and challenging esoteric field. Josephine McCarthy deliberately approached the writing of The Exorcist's Handbook in a casual, personal way without any specific magical or religious viewpoint, making it readily accessible
to practitioners from a variety of spiritual/magical backgrounds:

"Once you get past the surface manifestations of our spiritual constructs, the Inner worlds and the beings that inhabit them are the same--our spiritual constructs/religions are simply Man's attempt to create an interface with Divinity"

Throughout the book, Josephine presents a number of inner visions which will attune the aspirant to the inner contacts required
to achieve this work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A glance behind the curtain... 9 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback
If you have a practical interest in magic then I'd recommend to study all three volumes of the Magical Knowledge series first - then move on to the Exorcist's Handbook. The money invested on the four books is worth a library spent on traditional 'grimoire' or GD type of books on ritual magic. If, however, your interest is mainly historical or theoretical and you aim to just peak behind the veil of what is really going on during an Exorcism - then go on and take a look. There is no better book out there than this.

1.0 out of 5 stars X-Rated Harry Potter 16 July 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you enjoyed Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone you'll love this book! I have to say that it is very readable and moderately entertaining. However, most of the claims are not only highly suspect, but also come with absolutely no supportive evidence. Indeed, the author does not at any stage explain how she arrives at her often preposterous conclusions, aside from intimating that she comes from a long line of priests and priestesses.

The author claims that it is possible to be `possessed' by everything from demons through to fairies (which apparently come out of vortexes), angels and evens gods and goddesses. She also divines the type of possessing entity through using a Tarot deck. Oh, and angels have absolutely no sense of humour and show signs of asberger syndrome! It's all a bit `airy-fairy' and `new-agey' ... and dangerous. `Dark' entities do exist but, if you're in trouble, following suggestions in this book could be like throwing petrol on a fire.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The True Mysteries can not be studied intellectually--they are a natural expression of power that must be experienced" 20 April 2010

"Once you get past the surface manifestations of our spiritual constructs, the Inner worlds and the beings that inhabit them are the same--our spiritual constructs/religions are simply Man's attempt to create an interface with Divinity"

Throughout the book, Josephine presents a number of inner visions which will attune the aspirant to the inner contacts required to achieve this work. Once the visions have been completed, the retention of these paths and lines of spiritual power becomes a vital and ever evolving tool in the work of the exorcist. The book also examines in fine detail, what an exorcist actually does, from initial assessment of the situation to the actual exorcism of discarnate entities and explores radical aspects of magical practice concerning archangelic patterns within platonic solids, building blocks of the enigmatic Metatron Cube.

Seldom explored aspects of the Exorcists life are also examined, such as, the loneliness of the path, descriptions of working deeply in the Abyss, the psychological and dietary requirements to stay well, guardians, talismans, traditional ritual cleansing techniques and the correct level of psychic protection required to be effective.

Without a doubt, The Exorcist's Handbook is no nonsense, common sense description of genuine magical practice and presents a clear explanation of the role of an exorcist, the skills, knowledge and disciplines and inner contact to a spiritual line required of this most Divine duty.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible 26 Aug 2012
By Rich285 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This has been fantastic read, breaking down old and potentially dangerous methods most frequently used and acknowledging the diversity within the spirit realm, more than simple: demons bad and angels good but to understand the entities you make contact with and how to deal with various energies.

If you are going to undertake exorcism this is the only book I can recommend and allows you to maintain your own levels of practise whilst steering you away from any poor judgements. Mcarthy is clearly genuine and honest by relaying her own mistakes and showing where people can slip up.

5.0 out of 5 stars unique take on exorcisms 17 May 2013
By Kevin Gelesh - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The author takes a different approach to exorcism than what most people are used to. Utilizing a self created exorcists tarot deck to assist her and she offers the layout of the deck in this book for free. That's just one of the many unique methods found in this book. This author can write, I mean she could probably write a story about making spaghetti and her take on it would most likely be captivating. She also has real magical knowledge and experience going for her and I am starting to see her name being mentioned more often because of the soundness and practicality of her work.

5.0 out of 5 stars best book on exorcism 26 Aug 2012
By MonaLeFay - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I love this book. It get's to the point and is clearly for people who want to get a look inside the work of an exorcist. No Hollywood rubbish in here thank god!
You'll notice while reading that this is also written by someone who worked as an exorcist for many years and therefor not only a book based on research & assumptions!
