Product Description

Winner of the Guardian Children's Award and first in the highly acclaimed EXILES series. The Conroys are no ordinary family. For a start, they don't have a television. Nor are they allowed to keep pets. And Mr and Mrs Conroy never take their daughters - Ruth, Naomi, Rachel and Phoebe - on holiday. But then Mr and Mrs Conroy inherit £5000, and, to their daughters' dismay, decide to spend it redecorating the house over the summer. So the girls are packed off to Big Grandma's house for the holidays, where lots of chores and horribly long walks await them. At first it seems as though Big Grandma is determined to put a stop to any fun. But, being Conroys, the girls soon find novel ways to entertain themselves, and start having as many adventures and mishaps as usual . . . and after a while, even Big Grandma doesn't seem so bad . . .

This book may seem from its description to be just another childrens book, that is VERY, VERY wrong. This book captivates me more than even Harry Potter or one of John Irvings better books, for example `The world according to Garp`. The characters in this book have everything that you could want in entertainment, and although from the blurb their adventures may seem childish, they are written with a sophisticated wit that will bring tears to your eyes.

YAY 12 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
i related entirely with this book as i have spent many summers with my sister in my back garden in Lincolshire with nothing to do and have been sent to grandmas by the sea, although the book is not perhaps as long as i would like it to be, ideally it should be a never ending story, the twists and turns throughout the book , the dog food, does grandma really have books or not, why is graham hanging around all the time and why you must never open a door onto a fire or leave a burning candle unattended really add to the story and add an educational thing which i have never forgotten in a non patronising and deadly serious background
I loved this book and will be handing it out on the streets to everyone i meet, funny yet gripping its one of the best books i read before the age of 10

Yay!! A Great Book 7 Mar 2004
Format:Paperback
4 sisters are sent to stay with their grandmother whilst their house is being redecorated. The sisters love to read but as soon as grandma hears they are coming she locks all her books away and the sisters have to find other ways of having fun and coursing havoc!
I really enjoyed this book; it was really funny and clever. I like the way the story has a sudden twist at the begining then twists back towards the end. This book is quite hard going but very enjoyable!!!! You must read it!!!
