Product Description

Product Description

Diana Gabaldon’s brilliant storytelling has captivated millions of readers in her bestselling and award-winning Outlander saga. Now, in her first-ever graphic novel, Gabaldon gives readers a fresh look at the events of the original Outlander: Jamie Fraser’s side of the story, gorgeously rendered by artist Hoang Nguyen.

After too long an absence, Jamie Fraser is coming home to Scotland—but not without great trepidation. Though his beloved godfather, Murtagh, promised Jamie’s late parents he’d watch over their brash son, making good on that vow will be no easy task. There’s already a fat bounty on the young exile’s head, courtesy of Captain Black Jack Randall, the sadistic British officer who’s crossed paths—and swords—with Jamie in the past. And in the court of the mighty MacKenzie clan, Jamie is a pawn in the power struggle between his uncles: aging chieftain Colum, who demands his nephew’s loyalty—or his life—and Dougal, war chieftain of Clan MacKenzie, who’d sooner see Jamie put to the sword than anointed Colum’s heir.

And then there is Claire Randall—mysterious, beautiful, and strong-willed, who appears in Jamie’s life to stir his  compassion . . . and arouse his desire.

But even as Jamie’s heart draws him to Claire, Murtagh is certain she’s been sent by the Old Ones, and Captain Randall accuses her of being a spy. Claire clearly has something to hide, though Jamie can’t believe she could pose him any danger. Still, he knows she is torn between two choices—a life with him, and whatever it is that draws her thoughts so often elsewhere.

Step into the captivating, passionate, and suspenseful world of The Exile, and experience the storytelling magic of Diana Gabaldon as never before.

Firstly, I would suggest to everyone to ignore the 1 star reviews by people who didn't understand what the word graphic novel means and now feel cheated. If you buy a pair of shoes, you can't complain that you didn't get a handbag - similarly you can't complain about a graphic novel not being a "normal" novel. Maybe reading the description before buying might help.
The Exile is a wonderful book based on the first Outlander novel (Cross-stich here in the UK), but with a diverging story-lines. Here you get Jamie and Murtagh's side of the story - and glimpses of what happened during Outlander-events of which Claire stayed blissfully unaware. And the story is presented in pictures - and the hint is in the word GRAPHIC preceding the word NOVEL, graphic as in pretty pictures. The artist, Huang Nguyen, in my opinion, has done an outstanding job, and I enjoyed seeing the characters brought to life by his artwork. This is more then just a comic book, it's is quite artistic, but it's not one of Diana's normal novels - but it doesn't claim to be.

Needed a better artist 16 April 2011
By Squishy
Format:Hardcover
I love the outlander series and was desperately looking forward to re-reading the first novel in this new graphic novel format. I was initially delighted, as the first full frame of Jamie was as gorgeous as I'd hoped. Subsequent depictions were completely inconsistent with this, and in some frames the only way you can tell which one Jamie is, is by his red hair. Some of the drawings make him look awful, childish and even ugly. Those of you who have fallen in love with jamies character will no doubt also be disappointed - it seems the artist spent a lot of time on some frames and rushed through others, to their detriment. Claire looks like a china doll in some and a manga girl in others - not the feisty woman I'd envisaged. I still enjoyed it and will keep it, but just wish that the artist had been better.

I was realy excited to learn of The Exile being a massive fan of the series. I was looking forward to reading 'Jamie's side of the story' and the story brought to life in graphics. I was a wee bit disappointed that there was less novel than anticipated and I wasn't expecting a big novel as it was descirbed as a graphic novel. - Someone described it as a 'comic strip' and a kind of agree in parts!

Tough job to illstrate such well known characters as like me most avid fans will have a 'picure in mind' of what Jamie and Claire look like and graphic Jamie's not as nice as my boy and neither was 'comic strip' Claire! I don't mean to be disrespectfull to someone who is obviously a very talented artist as I did find a lot of the graphics very insightful so I suppose they didn't need words...

I'm not disappointed I bought the book it's a great addition to my library but fans beware so as not diasappointed - it's not a novel with pictures, it's a lot of lovely pictures with a little novel! It won't take long to 'read' but it's a beautiful book.
