4.0 out of 5 stars The goon detective 15 April 2012
By Paul Tapner TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Another volume in the Vertigo crime series. These are a5 sized books which tell a crime/thriller story in the graphic novel format with black and white artwork.

The story is completely self contained and runs for one hundred and ninety six pages. And features strong language and adult situations, thus is strictly for adults only.

It's all about Joe Ullen. Who comes from a backwater town called Elohra. But who left that behind when he became a big ice hockey star. His career now ended by injury, he's forced to return to his hometown when his high school sweetheart dies. He hadn't seen her in years. But she named him executor of his will.

Elhora is the kind of place that offers few prospects other than dreams of escape and something better. There's a local indian reservation where people live lives of squalor and poverty. And one Indian lady who has made money from dubious means. But the town also has some dark secrets. As does Joe. And doing his duty as executor might bring all of them to light....

This has a plot with some decent twists and turns that should keep you hooked to the end. It's more thriller than mystery though because whilst Joe does work things out along the way there's not much in the way of clues for the reader.

It's strength rather lies in the characterisation and depiction of small town America. And it's very good in this respect, with a convincing depiction of life on the reservation. The narrative does have some lengthy flashback scenes as various things are filled in but these never disrupt the flow of it.

The characters are all good creations rather than great ones, but Joe is a fairly appealing lead as he tries to find the truth. And all in all it's a decent read. Not a standout entry in this range, but a pretty good one. But what really does stand out is the art, which is clear and eye catching and very good indeed.

3.0 out of 5 stars The best thing about this is the artwork 11 Nov 2010

The Executor, one of the "graphic mysteries" from the Vertigo Crime line, revolves around former NHL enforcer Joe, who finds himself going back to his decrepit home town when his high school girlfriend is found dead with him named as the executor of her will. What Joe uncovers is that her death was no accident, and that the town's buried secrets are rising upwards, and that no one may escape. While The Executor is fairly compelling, writer Jon Evans' dialogue is stale, and the motivations and characterizations of many of the characters, villains and victims alike, feel simply half-hearted. That being said, the artwork of Andrea Mutti is wonderful, and may very well be the best to be found in any of these Vertigo Crime books yet. All in all, The Executor isn't bad, but there isn't anything here other than the artwork that makes it really worth recommending.
2.0 out of 5 stars Good Artwork, Weak Story 25 Jun 2011

This is not one of my favorite of the Vertigo Crime imprints. The story is just a touch strange the characters somewhat flat, which makes it a slog even for a smallish work.

5.0 out of 5 stars These Vertigo Books are awesome 18 May 2011

Book is just outright creepy. Without doubt I have never read a book where I was so looking forward to the demise of the evil. Pick it up a long with the rest of Vertigo.
