This 1989 supernatural detective adventure features Sarah Livingstone [June Chadwick, Lydia in 'V'] as an art teacher turned amateur treasure hunter, who hires ‘down on his luck’ charter boat owner Max Cash [Wayne Crawford] to help search for the ‘El Diablo’ a 300 year old treasure ship. En-route they encounter storms, uncover clues, come across dead bodies, black magic, the supernatural, start romances and meet mysterious rivals. It seems it has it all
The first 15 minutes looks quite promising –in a TV movie style manner and screen format; dramatic shipwreck, some gruesome deaths as some scuba divers fall foul to the local denizen of the deep, yet it soon falls into a simple detective movie as they search for the ship and plods along looking for direction. The first thing is that this is not really a horror at all, for the only blood one sees is at the beginning and the other deaths are mainly ‘out of sight’ and there are few low key scary moments [lose a *] –although some scenes are tense. The plot is fine but tries to be all things to all people as it throws in elements of adventure, murder, thriller, black magic, the supernatural and some mixed in religious folklore but they are all too fleeting and never really gel [lose a *] and feel as though they have been based on other movies. The scenery and underwater scenes help revive interest but do tend to have a national geographic feel to them. Scantily clad assistant Tracy [Sheri Able] provides the bulk of the eye candy –and little other purpose, while the overall sound and picture quality smack of 70’s late night adult TV movies and the acting is very hit and miss [Lose a *]. There’s also a lot of needless swearing involved which probably pushed the age range up, otherwise it could easily have been a 12 and gained a *.

Did not meet my expectations 30 Oct. 2013

I normally like this genere of film and am a big fan of Michelle Pfeiffer, but there was something lacking in this film. I saw it three times to try to pick out what I didn't like in particular. Each time I felt dissatisfied and not entertained.
