Synopsis

Veganism - the diet that eliminates all animal products - might be a scary prospect to some people, who fear the loss of protein from their diet, or that food just won't taste the same. But Dreena Burton demonstrates that anyone can prepare and enjoy an array of delectable vegan dishes without having to compromise their health or sense of taste. THE EVERYDAY VEGAN includes recipes for all aspects of meal-making - appetisers, soups, salads, main courses, and desserts - as well as cooking and shopping tips, ingredient notes, and meal plan suggestions for holidays and special events. Each recipe contains nutritional analysis, and health-conscious cooks will appreciate that the recipes do not use hydrogenated oils and very little refined flours and sugars. Favourites include: Marinara Tortilla Pizzas, Mushroom Pepper Risotto, Peston Portabellas, and Spicy Thal Stew. Whether you are a lifelong vegan, or someone wanting to experiment, this book will help anyone discover amazing flavours without having to resort to animal products.

Nice to look at... 14 Dec 2005
By sarahalliez VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is a gorgeous looking book but as it is a US publication, I found it quite frustrating as many of the ingredients are hard to find in the UK.

However, this would be a good addition to your shelf if, like me, you're a vegan of a few years standing and fancy creating something out of the ordinary.

Great Inspiration 20 Dec 2006
Format:Paperback
My son's dairy allergy and Dreena's books are the two reasons why I became vegan! I use this book at least once a week, it has some really delicious recipes. My current favourites are - the lentil veggie wraps, the falafels (plus recommended sauce), the risotto, the Mexican tofu tacos and pretty much everything else I've tried!I just love the way Dreena makes food taste! I thoroughly recommend this book.

Wow!! 22 April 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I follow a very strict diet for health reasons and this book has been a life saver. Not only is it the best vegan cookbook I have found, it simply is our best cookbook period. Great ideas, easy-to-use format, readily available ingredients and sensational flavours. What a find!

An added bonus is that kids love it. My son and his friends particularly like the treats, especially the chocolate cake and the coconut-raspberry squares. It is great to have such healthy alternatives.

My wife and I have been using this book for over a year and have given it as a gift to several people. They all love it. We have also shared the recipes with many friends when entertaining. It is so much fun to watch people's reactions as they sample these delectable dishes. Our adult favorites are the tiramisu, the tofu sandwich filling (we couldn't believe tofu could taste so great), spiced mushroom potato phyllo pie and the chocolate cake (everyone loves this cake).

And check out the holiday feast menu - incredible.

This book has certainly earned a 5 star rating!... We were delighted with this purchase.

I LOVE this book! 27 Jan 2002

I was fortunate to recently purchase several vegan cookbooks[....] I have to admit, I was unsure about purchasing this one as there is currently not much specific information about the book's content on the web site (ie, other books have sample pages available for viewing-probably as this is a recently published book). The book's cover and the fact that information available states the author uses no hydrogenated oils and very little refined flours/sugars convinced me to buy the book. I am SO GLAD that I did. As luck would have it, this turned out to be one of the best cookbooks I've ever bought. Not only are the recipes vegan, using healthful ingredients, the recipes are also very straightforward, using ingredients commonly found in the average person's pantry/refridgerator. The recipes I've tried so far include Spicy Thai Stew; Tomato-Olive Rice Bake; Ginger Holsein Noodles; Double Chocolate Pecan Chippers(cookies); Orange Almond Scones; and Sweet and Simple Grain Pilaf. Everything I've made has turned out great, and was very easy prepare. The fact that this book is endorsed by Ingrid Newkirk, President of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is an added bonus. For those of you out there who also realize that this book is a wise investment, you might want to consider buying 2 copies right away- one for yourself and one to give as a gift!

A thoughtfully prepared guide for the new vegan 19 Feb 2005
By Melanie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is a thoughtfully prepared guide for the new vegan, and a comprehensive collection of recipes. Since the book has over fifty pages of introductory information about nutrition, cooking and the particulars of vegan ingredients, the inexperienced cook, or those new to a plant-based diet will find lots of help in getting started.

The recipes are well organized and laid out. They include nice preparation tips and well-written instructions as well as useful nutritional information. There is also a good index (which many cookbooks often lack), and it includes beautiful color photos of some of the recipes. Many cookbooks - especially vegetarian ones - include recipes with far too many ingredients and preparation steps for the everyday cook. The Everyday Vegan avoids this pitfall for the most part. The section on sauces, includes recipes that could easily become household favorites - like "Miso Good Gravy!" and "Amazing Creamy Caesar Dressing." There's a great section on Salads and Sandwiches which offers quick and easy meal ideas including a delicious way to use up leftover fried or marinated tofu in a sandwich filling. --Amy O'Neill Houck
