I read about the EOD diet in the Times on Saturday. I couldn't wait until the book came out on Thursday so I started the diet on Monday. It is Friday morning now, my 3rd fast day, and I have lost 4lb :)

I now have the book on my Kindle and it is a great book and really easy to read.

The diet is really simple, eat 500 calories on your fast day and eat what you want on your feast day. Throw in some exercise and the results will be even better.

One of the best bits about the book are the meal suggestions, there are 28 recipes for 400 cal lunches, 28 dinners and 28 100 cal snacks. The recipes are easy and don't have huge ingredients lists of expensive items that are hard to find.

Fingers crossed that my success continues.

20th January update
I have been on the diet for 2 weeks now and have lost 9.5 lbs. Very happy :)
I am finding fast days very easy but must admit to sometimes bingeing on feast days, I hope I get control of this soon.

The book is well written in an easy to follow style. Varady is a scientist and bases her writing on her own research and the research of others. The evidence is compelling and the advice on how to follow the diet is well structured. It's also very clear how a maintenance regime will ensure no subsequent weight gain.

Varady doesn't really acknowledge how people with disordered eating or eating disorders will cope on this diet. I know that my eating is disordered and I can overeat substantially. So I feel I do need to keep an eye on my calorie intake during 'feast' days where she says that everyone eats up to 125% of their recommended calorie intake. I am sure that if I wasn't careful I would eat 150%, although even with that amount of intake I should still lose, albeit at a slower rate.

I've started with every-other-day fasting just this week and I couldn't fit in a strict day-on, day-off approach because of commitments (involving food!) I already had in my diary but I did fast for 3 days out of 7 and I lost 3 lbs in that week. It's early days, but initial results are promising. I was also surprised that the fasting days were not as arduous as I was expecting. Yes I was hungry, but it was easy to accept that and not to be tempted. I've found it better for me to eat my one meal in the evening and I intend to keep pursuing this approach until I am back at my fighting weight!

What I would have liked to have seen more of is some additional detail - certain facts are presented that left me wanting to know more. For example, she states that someone who is at a given weight and who has always weighed that amount has a higher metabolic rate than someone of the same weight but who has been overweight and has dieted.

Never dieted in my life, but heading towards overweight and having some back and knee problems when running decided it was time to loose a few kilograms.

Didn't like the idea of constant depravation, and wanted to see the result fast.

Just start the plan yesterday and will only go on EODD for as long as it takes to get to my target weight. Then it will be a modified version, which means I can eat and drink all of those naughty things but get to a long term healthy position.

Being a scientist myself, I've never really been vaguely interested in diets, but this came as a buy product of some cancer research.

Lost 5lbs in a fortnight and this diet far more effective than it's more famous counterpart, the 5:2, which from my own experience failed last year after doing it for 7 weeks - didn't lose one pound of fat on that diet. Fasting was fine but I found I was consuming extra calories on the 5 other days.

EOD keeps the extra calorie consumption in check...so pleased am I with results, that I plan to say on this food programme until I reach my desired weight.

I bought the book because someone in Wales was talking to someone I know, and he swore by this way of losing weight. The dietitian that I went to see at my medical practice recommended not eating foods we like and to simply count calories and to stay off sugar and salt in any food.

This book suggests that losing weight by simply eating what you want, on one day and then fasting - well almost - the next, so that your mind can see how easy it will be to stop eating for one day -other than about 500 calories - because you can tell your body that the next day you can eat what you want. This seems a better idea than spending every time every day, worrying about what you shouldn't or mustn't eat, with nothing to help you achieve your goal that isn't unending torture.

If anyone is interested in reading about how to have a day of pleasure followed by a day of not eating much but always safe in the knowledge that it isn't long until the day of eating pleasure comes around again.

Much more do-able.

I am sorry but this book was not the answer for me and I had had such high hopes for it.

I could manage the fasting day very easily, but found myself eating twice as much on the non fast days as I eat normally.

Not an ounce was lost, but at least non were gained.

So back to the drawing board.
