Product Description

Anyone who admits to a sense of confusion when confronted with the bewildering array of European waterway signs, symbols, rules and regulations should find this book useful. The author demystifies this world for the visitor, thereby eliminating any problems that may arise. This second edition includes chapters for Americans considering cruising the European waterways and for Med-bound sailors.

By Jo-Ann
Format:Paperback
I quote a bullet point from the front cover: 'Through routes to the Med'.
The relevant chapter (15) consists of exactly 3 pages, and I quote from the chapter:
'The intention of this chapter is not to cover the various routes in detail, but to give some sound and very practical advice...' - utterly contrary to the promise on the front cover!
Sorry, but since my main interest was specifically to take a boat through the canals to the Mediterranean this section is utterly useless and not at all 'what it says on the tin'!
Otherwise the rest of the book is informative and helpful.
So, if like me you were hoping to learn about the various through routes to the Med, then unfortunately this is not the book for you.

Old and out of date. 27 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
This was no doubt adequate in its day, but its day was 50 years ago. It's ponderous, out of date, and full of dull and really badly printed photos by Anthony Armstrong-Jones (remember him?). All in all, it's not going to be of much use to anybody except an historian of the early days of pleasure boating on the French canals, from a British perspective.

New to cruising canals 15 July 2010
By cloosh - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am due to retire soon and am fascinated with the idea of travelling on the European canals at a snail's pace. This book gave a great kick off as to the sorts of details I have to look into before making my dream a reality. It is full of plain good sense without any commercial tinsel by someone who seems to have been there.

Pilot the boat 14 Aug 2011
By J. Clark - Published on Amazon.com

If you need to know the proper signals and lock procedures and tie-up protocol, this is the book for you. Not for me. I just want to sit and watch the country pass.
