I bought this book to evaluate it as syllabus material for PRMIA's Associate Professional Risk Manager certification - it passed that test. The book is concise and well written and covers all the necessary topics for a good understanding of financial risk management without being over theoretical or going into detailed mathematics. Despite being written by three authors this is not apparant in style. The book is also very useful as a reference book to help with general risk management knowledge.

I am a software test manager, with no mathematical/risk background worth talking about. I work, however, with a good deal of people who are risk management professionals, and whose mathematical background is way beyond mine. This creates a language and understanding barrier, and can cause difficulties in day-to-day project work.
For three years I've been looking for a sensibly-pitched book that will give me a decent grounding in what the risk managers are trying to do, without me having to undertake 400 hours of pointless study just to get the 20-odd hours worth that I need. This book really hit the mark for me. Heavy on explanation, and light on maths, I now have a decent understanding of why companies engage in risk management strategies such as hedging, why they use derivatives and other instruments even if they're not necessarily financial companies, and I understand a fair bit about the legislation too (although it is five years old in this edition, so doesn't have anything about Solvency II - but I do now understand why something like Solvency II was required!). If you have a high school/early uni maths background (even if rusty), you should get through this book in 30-40 hours' reading, and the majority of it is relevant to my work too.
All in all, as a sourcebook to get up to speed when you have to deal with risk professionals, this book is as close to my holy grail as I expect to find. Recommended.

An a Systems Security & Audit Professional, I was looking around for the right material on Risk Management and I found the one in . The Essentials of Risk Management: The Definitive Guide for the Non-risk Professional. Well organized, simplicity of contents and digestible to me, passionate about Risk Management. Gave me a fairly good knowledge on Corporate Risk, Interest rate risk and hedging with derivatives, Asset liability management, Credit risk, Operational risk and many of the buzz words I hear every day in my profession and financial markets.
