On the AllMusic website's overview of how this 'dumb blonde' Hollywood icon's small back catalogue has been used, William Ruhlmann strikes a warning about the calibre of the many compilations available: "Starting in the 1990s, many small labels, especially overseas, released CDs that repackaged the same material. Monroe's fame has only increased since her death, making such albums popular despite their repetitiousness and often inferior quality."

This near-hour-long effort of 1992, from the usually reliable British Music Club imprint, is far from the worst. Highlights from the 19 song track-listing - which is taken from Monroe's films, studio recordings, TV appearances and live performances - include: her surprisingly short but very famous breathy rendition of 'Happy Birthday' for President John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden in May 1962; her winning Betty Boop impression on 'I Wanna Be Loved By You'; a sultry revival of Cole Porter's 'My Heart Belongs To Daddy', and an effective interpretation of the vintage Irving Berlin song 'You'd Be Surprised'. They show that Monroe had the pitch and personality to put lighthearted material over with some panache.

The decision not to pad The Essential Recordings out with inessential excerpts from TV commercials, radio appearances and film dialogue - as many other unscrupulous compilers have done - should also be welcomed. However Monroe's laboured attempts at balladry - as on 'River of No Return' and 'Lazy' - do tend to confirm the view that she often struggled - like the character of Susan Alexander in Orson Welles' Citizen Kane - when she was called upon to perform something with more gravitas than racy pop songs. The absence of the popular 'After You Get What You Want, You Don't Want It'; the variable sound quality, and the underwhelming use of its photogenic subject on the sleeve and in the 12 page booklet also count against this otherwise solid compilation.

I never took much notice of Marilyn's music until fairly recently, when various tracks appeared on some multi-artist compilations that I had bought. At that point, I realized how good a singer she was, so I ended up buying this compilation to hear more. In fact, it seems that Marilyn didn't record a lot of music, and that this compilation should satisfy all but her most dedicated fans.

Here, you will find the songs associated with her (I wanna be loved by you, Diamonds are a girl's best friend), as well as other songs recorded for her movies and a few studio recordings. Of the other songs, I particularly like Some like it hot and My heart belongs to Daddy, but there's a lot of great music here.

It's a pity that Marilyn Monroe didn't record more music, but this collection serves as a reminder of her singing ability. She lived her life like a candle in the wind, as Elton John observed, but her music will live forever, along with her movies.

You've heard all these songs before, and they are just as good as ever.

I bought this because I wanted to learn some of the songs. I took it to my music teacher along with the sheet music, and I tell you, they are much more difficult than they sound. If MM hadn't become famous as a film star she could have been a jazz singer, and maybe there would have been a happy ending...

Good compilation of the recordings of Marilyn singing. She could sing well,as these recordings show. Just listen to
'do it again' which just oozes sexuality in the same way as her acting. One very talented lady.

I absolutely love this album. I love Marilyn as an actress and didn't know she had sang so many songs i knew. There are good few songs from her films which were fun to sing along to.
