Biography

The son of a grocer and Italian-born immigrant, Anthony Dominick Benedetto was born on August 3, 1926, in the Astoria section of Queens, New York. He attended the High School of Industrial Arts in Manhattan, where he nurtured his dual passions, singing and painting. His boyhood idols included Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole, both big influences on Bennett’s easy, natural singing style. ... Read more in Amazon's Tony Bennett Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Dubbed the "best singer in the in the business" by two of the 20th century's greatest crooners--Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra--Tony Bennet more than deserves this accolade. With his exquisite tone and superlative phrasing Tony Bennet has straddled the twin worlds of jazz virtuosity and showbiz glitz since the 1950s, having enjoyed a resurgence with the MTV generation in the mid 1990s boosted, no doubt, by the lounge culture Ratpack revival. This collection serves as a useful retrospective of his career, bringing his early hits together with his later collaborations with kd lang and Elvis Costello. --F.B.Hawkes

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Tony 8 July 2003
Format:Audio CD
A classic Tony Bennett album has to be among any collection of the best singers of the second half of the 20th century. His definitive versions of so many songs, especially Stranger in Paradise and I Left My Heart in San Francisco, are part of the memories of practically anyone born before 1950. This album brings together the favourites and is one I shall keep in the car to make every journey that bit pleasanter.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Essential Tony Bennett 23 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD
The man is brilliant and this cd does not disappoint. All the songs in the album are great but The shadow of your smile is amazing, the man was born to sing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 3 Feb 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A very nice mixture of tracks on this album. I only recently started to listen to Tony Bennett after seeing the programme on the making of his "Duets" albums. From there I bought "Duets" and enjoyed that very much. This is a retrospective and the difference in his voice between the older and later tracks is quite noticeable but very enjoyable.
