An evil book! 11 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
Hemingway's works cannot be sliced and spliced into 'best of' portions of books, any more than a human can be made through a patchwork quilt of limbs and organs.

This cynical collection of segments should never have been produced, let alone under the disingenuous title of "The Essential Hemingway". If you want to read the works of one of the greatest writers of all time, for the love of god, read his works. In full. THAT is the essential Hemingway.

I have only every thrown away one book in my life. It was this one, through sheer disgust.

The Perfect Book! 27 Sep 2003
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent selection of Hemingway's work. It includes his best novel, 'Fiesta', plus snippets from others; 'A Farewell to Arms', and 'For Whom the Bell Tolls'. But for me it has always been the short stories which shine and they are here too. I can bever tire of reading the likes of 'The Killers' and 'Hills Like White Elephants', which in so few words evoke such great atmosphere and observe so very naturally upon humanity. The dialogue throughout his writing is quick and believable, and his gift for description famously precise. I treasure my copy of this book. I think it is excellent value as timeless and easily accessible literature. Buy it and let it become for years your trusty, dog-eared travel companion.

I love Hemingway, and this is a great collection for my travels, however, a couple of the novels listed are only snippets which was a little misleading. BUT, it is still a pretty great collection for the price I paid (just under £4)
